I've been out of the photography game for a while but planning to get back into studio work. I have an old D7100. I've considered upgrading to the current DX model (D7500) but I'm struggling to see much of a reason too. The specs don't seem to be much of a jump. Main differences seem to be quality of life upgrades (like wireless and touch screen). In terms of shooting in a studio setting, the models seem pretty much the same.

Am I missing something? Is there a newer/better DX Nikon available? All my lens are DX so I would prefer to stick with that. I dont think full frame would make much of a difference for my work. I wont be printing, just posting online on my own site/socials/forums etc..

Any help greatly appreciated.

I think the sensors are pretty much the same according to photons2photos except 21mpx in the d7100

I had a d7100 and only swapped it for a d500 to get stuff it sounds you just don’t need eg: buffer depth, fast AFC, v low light AF etc

I don’t see much of a difference for considered shots like landscapes etc

It’s a great camera as is the D7200 also and better sensor than the D7000

These days a lot of people buy new cameras because they want them, rarely, IMHO, because they need them. I bought a D850 trading in my D810 for it (plus a LOT of money) and I can say that there was nothing wrong with the D810 at all, I just wanted a new one before they stopped making DSLRs.

My wife uses a D5000, she is about to take it with her on holiday to India with an 18-300mm lens. Apart from the fact that we've had to buy an aftermarket battery because Nikon don't make one anymore, there is nothing wrong with the camera for day-to-day stuff at all so I'd expect the D7100 would be in much the same position. You probably don't need it but buy it if you think you want it, I would; but then I can't resist shiny new stuff.

If the 7100 does what you want/need it to do, I'd stick with it rather than forking out for some bells and whistles that won't get used. FWIW, I usually turn any touch screens off since my nose has a habit of changing focus points etc.!

As Shiny Martin says, now't wrong with buying new kit if you want it though! (As long as senior management issues the relevant permits in triplicate!!!)

Thanks for the info guys. Ive noticed the D7500 has 21 MP while my older D3100 is 24 MP. Isnt that a bit of a downgrade?

Not in all ways (possibly!) The larger photosites of the lower pixel count sensor might give better high ISO capability and/or better dynamic range.

Having owned a 7000 ,then 2x 7100 which both broke within a month . Then getting a 7200 at launch that was the best of the series lasted me well giving superb images … sold all my DSLR gear after heart failure so No longer have one

I don’t notice it d7100 vs d500. It’s only about 12% in linear resolution.

I think a factor of 2X in mpx makes a difference

If you control the lighting then the extra boost that the D7500/500 gets at iso 400 might not be worth much. The D7100 has a Toshiba sensor, not a Sony one like most Nikons.

Are the sony sensors better?

YouTube says that against the D7200, the 7100 (Toshiba) was better at low isos while the 7200 (Sony) was better at very high ones. This might carry across to other Sony sensors.

Thanks for all the help guys. I found a good deal on a D7200 so I decided to get that. I'll sell my old D7100 so it shouldn't cost me much overall. I put a lot of planning & research into my studio shoots, so the lack of a second SD card slot on the D7500 just felt a bit risky to me.

As far as I am concerned the only thing 'wrong' with the D7100 was the appalling buffer, I would get frustrated at air shows when the camera would lock up and I ended up lifting my K-3. The D3 wasn't much better .

The D500 answered my prayers. The D7200 was an improvement buffer wise, but I believe the D7500 was even better but not on the D500 level. The D500 only gets replaced if it breaks...

Personally, if the camera is just used for studies shoots, I would've put the money into lenses.
