under wraps at Nikon? - on somebody's wishlist but away of if it happens at all?

I heard a rumour that it was a rumour!

Somehow the more I think about it I don't see them bringing this out. Could be wrong, just my thoughts.

Regards

Chris

Pats Sony A900 :)

Glad I didn't wait for this - it'll still happen though.

I'm not sure it will - I can't see the market, assuming this is a compact version of the D3X (as the D700 is a compact version of the D3).

Its a specialist (and I imagine small) market for the D3X and the majority of photographers who need what that camera delivers will of already bought one - I just don't see how many Nikon would actually sell and why they'd choose to dilute the D3X market.

Be glad you are into photography and not Marketing then ;)

The Canon 5D MKII has done rather well.. small and compact.. Nikon doesn't have anything in that space.

A D700x priced right (price is key) will sell like hot-cakes.

Its not just the D700X what about the D400 and D90 +? Canon now have the 7D and 550D with greater than 12 mp, Nikon are falling behind. At this rate people will be leaving the dark side and going to Canon!:bonk:

Me, I'm staying put and waiting for the D400........but hurry up Nikon!!!

Maybe, but we'll have to agree to disagree ;) I always see the 5d MkII and the D700 as competitors, maybe not exactly in terms of specs, but certainly in terms of market space (high end consumer, wedding photographers etc...). I think there are enough differences between that and the D3X sensor, particularly in terms of low light performance that without some changes to the sensor design then it probably couldn't fill that space.

I still think a mid life upgrade (similar to the D300s or D3s) is far more likely than an upgrade to an 'X' version.

You are assuming that low light performance is the driver - I think this is over-egged. A D700x isn't going to be aimed at wedding photographers, any more than a D3 is aimed at landscape photographers. There is room for both.

I want to sell my D3 and wish there was a Nikon equal to the 5D2 it terms of pixels.. id have one TODAY!!!

I wouldn't say it's falling behind; in the numbers war maybe but as cameras that do a job (very well), the current D300S and the D90 are top-notch. Unfortunately, to Joe Public who is wowed by bigger numbers so obviously Canon has the upper hand.

I'd like to see what the D400, if it comes, will present over the D300s. More megapixels - almost certainly; more features (refined video, faster fps) - probably; amazing high ISO performance - hopefully. A built-in grip - I doubt it.....

Me, I'm still waiting for Nikon to realise that there are a number of photographers who would love to have a 'new' version of the D2X/XS; a 1.5x crop sensor pro body that's gripped, fully weather-sealed but with sensor performance akin to that in the D300s. I would buy one this minute :)

Pats Sony A900 :)

Glad I didn't wait for this - it'll still happen though.

who is this "Pat" and why do you have his A900? :suspect:

I bet if the D700x does materialise Nikon will have had to think long and hard about their pricing strategy, lest it steals sales from the D3s

What on earth are you guys printing that you require 22mpx? I really hope Nikon doesn't go that route, heck my data handling problems are bad enough as it is!

I agree, 6 mega pixies in my D50 was more than adequate, just moved to Canon for speed etc.

I'd jump on a D700x faster than anyone can unzip their trousers .... the D3x is just too big and bulky. Never liked that size. Tried it on the D2Xs, loved the camera, but due to its' size hardly used it.

I'm put-off the D3x because of size, waiting, and waiting and waiting; at one stage even contemplated the Sony ; but I am not keen on having two different brands. I even went so far as contemplated the idea of a Hasselblad for my landscapes & nature, and keeping my D700 for light travel.

So, yes please, D700x soon.

Hi Wail,

Salam allah kum

I hope you are well, long time no talk!

The D3X is an awesome camera and I actually wanted it for the feel. The D700 is also a good camera and great for those low light situations.

Best regards

Chris

Hi Chris,

We alaykum El Salam (and peace upon you)

I am pretty sure the D3x is awesome; but for me it's the size that put me off, that's all. That's why I toyed with the idea of Sony A900 and the Hasselblad; but as I've said, having two brands doesn't go well with me, while I cannot begin to justify the cost of the Hassy (would have to sleep in the street while I rent out the house) :p

The only other option would have been to go with the Sony A900 and sell my Nikon collection; no way! I'd lose a lot. So, I am sticking it out with Nikon until, hopefully soon, they'll release the D700x :)

I personally have no regrets going for the A900, its probably the best camera I've ever owned. Still, if Nikon had come out with the D700x a year ago, then I'd probably still be shooting Nikon. As it is, I've had nearly 1 year now with the A900 rather than wait for vapourware.

Obviously a D700x would interest me, but really I no longer have the glass to use that sort of camera. Luckily the Sony lenses I have - Sony 16-35 f/2.8, Sony 24-70 f/2.8 and Sony 70-400 SSM are easily as good if not better than the Nikon versions.

It shall be here Insha'Allah :D

Hi Andy,

I almost went for the A900; but I had to rethink that plan! To sell my Nikon kit and go with Sony would mean I'd take a huge hit on my set-up, and I'd be with Sony when I've got the rest of my family going with Nikon ; also, what would I do when Nikon later-on comes out with a better piece of equipment that I'd fancy

I just couldn't give-in to the idea of being happy with changing brands just because one is better at this given time.

In all honesty, as this is just a hobby, I don't see the urgent need to move; as much as I'd love to have that bigger and sexier sensor of the A900 / D3x, it's just not for me yet :shake:

When, and I hope soon, Nikon do launch something in a price range and size that is within my grasp, I will jump on it pretty fast.

Who knows, may be this is my way to convince myself that I need to get myself a Hasselblad :cuckoo:

perhaps nikon should rethink and put removable winders on its pro bodies. besides the price its the bulk puts me of a D3.
a D700s would be very welcome

what a great article thanks

hes correct

but as i shoot a lot of low light

much as i like the d200 thats just arrived it cant do what my d700 can at high iso/low light

the d200 can and does provide great images at lower iso in good light

i am allways practicing whenever i can.
