Hey guys, I was looking for some advice on upgrading my Nikon, I have the D5000 and after searching and reading tons of articles it looks like the D7000 is the way forward for my upgrade.

I will try and give you some info so you can get an idea of who I am and the things I am wanting to do.

Now, I don't really just concentrate on one type of subject, I maybe probably should, however, I do a lot of urban exploration, I generally like to use HDR for this, mainly bracketing 3 photos, I have a huge interest in Motorsport, I have a BMW that I take to shows so I'm always snapping away at the car shows, sometimes a nice landscape can catch my attention for a while, and a few animals of nature when I'm out and about.

I'd like to get some Car and Bike action shots on the race tracks, birds in action up in the sky, I like to zoom and crop quite a lot so the extra MP the D7000 has will come in handy.

I have 2 lenses at the moment, the Sigma 10-20mm as my wide, and a Nikon 35mm 1.8, I did have the 18-55 kit lens, which i gave to my partner to use on her D70 that we got cheap.

I know I will need to buy a 200mm or 300mm lens really to get in close for the action shots, again which zoom lenses should I be looking at?

The D7000 has an offer of £100 cashback at the moment, making the purchase even more tempting, I have the cash to upgrade, but just wanting some real user experience and maybe example of photos taken with this camera ( if that's allowed as a request, apologies if not)

Hope you can help me out and share your experience with me.

Thank you

Hi,

To be able to help you it would be really helpful to know your budget for the new lens.

I haven't really thought that far ahead.

I buy all my equipment brand new, my local camera store are usually pretty well priced as well so never really think about the cost of things, If I need it, then I just get it sort of thing, I don't try and skimp in this game, If it costs more than I expect I just have to wait a little longer to get some funding together.

The D7000 was, and still is, an excellent camera, it will be a big improvement over your D5000.

If you are going for a prime telephoto then the Nikon 300mm F4 AF-S is excellent (perhaps even better than that) although not cheap at around 1K. I love this lens and wish I still had it.

There are a host of 70-200mm f2.8's to choose from, many like the Sigma and Tamron versions but the Nikon versions (both the VR and VRII) are much better. The 70-200mm VRII is around £1,500 new (you'd have to buy the VR used). Nikon also do a 70-200mm F4 VR which is getting rave reviews and is around 1K. All of them are very good and some are beyond good.

The latest Tamron and Nikon 70-300mm VR lenses are worth considering, though a small step down in IQ (but a big step down in cost!!). I like the both of these lenses.

Plenty of choice :)

:plusone: the only thing I have to add is that the new Tamron 70-200 VC is supposed to be pretty good but priced at 200GBP below the Nikon I would go for the Nikon.

Well I upgraded to the D7000 and I am very happy with it.

I have also ordered the Nikon VR ED IF 70-300mm after much thought, i stumbled across the Currys/ Pc world ebay store selling them at £200 Delivered
