Hi guys,

Been using D7000 for about a year and is itching to upgrade to full frame since the release of D600 has made entry to FX more affordable. However, since it is still not that cheap, I am actually looking at a used D700 instead of D600. Used D700 can go anywhere from £700 to £1200, and a new D600 costs £1300. On top of that, I still need to get another mid range zoom to replace my current one. Anyone can give me some advice?

Hi I've been chewing over buying a d700 as well, but Im of the opinion that used d700s are very overpriced right now. Im looking at the d800 and D600 now having found their market level at around 25 - 30% off of their respective launch prices and as you say a d600 can be had for a bit over £1400 so what's a used one worth? I'd reckon about £1150-1200 plus maybe? (if you can get one obviously)
Then a 2+ year old d700 with say 15-20k clicks doesn't stack up any more for £1000-1100 quid, I think they're more like worth £800 - £900 for a vgc copy. I think looking at the trend on eBay where most sales are between 900-1000 and the high level of non sales above this, then if you wait till the new year you'll pick a good one up well below £900 easily, and with a bit of patience probably near £800. Or you'd have a good chance of finding an £1100+ d600 then as well if your feeling flush, either way you should save a chunk towards a new mid range zoom

Just got £900 on ebay for my d700 with 68k clicks, so happy with £800 after their awful fees

The D600 vs D700 would be well reserved for another topic, but bottomline is I could do with D600's higher megapixel count and better DR, but realistically 12MP is enough for what I do, and the pro construction of D700 is also a pulling factor.

As for lens, I'll probably be settling for tamron's 28-75 f2.8. I've got 50 1.4 and plan to get 135 f2 DC for studio shots

I tried the D700 before switching to D7000. The question to ask yourself is would you need the upgrade to a FX DSLR? As it is a big investment (for me) in terms of the lenses you will need to get.

I have to admit FX is great when I used the D700 for a week!! but I could not justify the cost as a student, I don't have the money to invest in that plus the lenses, 14-24 for landscapes, 24-70 as general walk about, 70-200 all of which cost more than 900 pounds each.

So I am happy with the pictures taken with my current lenses and D7000.

But a lot of people dont want the D600 and the D800 (high price and large files) so whats left, the D700. Ive seen lots of people buying D700s at the moment at the 1050-1100 mark so the demand is clearly there. I doubt they will drop in the new year to under 900 for a VGC camera. Ive read of a few issues with the D600 which is making the D700 a better alternative at a lower price, people are even switching back to the D700 after selling them because the D600 isnt turning out to be worthwhile.

If you are planning to move to full frame then you may want to consider upgrading your lenses first. If you buy a good midrange zoom like the Nikon 24-70 it will cost you around £950 used but you can always sell it if you decided not to upgrade. In the meantime the cost of full frame bodies continues to fall D700's will soon be around £800 and used D600's will start to become available.

I agree with you totally re the file size they're just too large for many IMO as well, and yes that and the general lack of used bodies available is definitely keeping the prices of the D700 buoyant, but many of these bodies are three and four years old, I think after Christmas with more used equipment on the market and less money to spend after the holidays, there'll be some very good deals available particularly if you don't mind using eBay. Having said all that I decided my d7000 is plenty for me for the time being anyway.

^ this makes shed loads of sense as well, particularly for the OP

I've already got the 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8. Also, I'm planning to sell the Tamron 17-50 to get the 28-75, which will be around £260. I'll just need to sell my 85mm and get a 135mm when the opportunity arises.

But yeah, I think waiting around to Christmas period might land me better deals.
