You may well have received an e-mail about this (if you registered your cameras) but there will probably be some here who haven't registered or who bought second hand and haven't had the chance to do so.
Not the first time Nikon batteries have had a similar problem - IIRC, they're actually manufactured by Sony in China. I know that some EN-EL3s had a similar problem soon after I bought my D70 - my EN-EL3 was replaced within a couple of days (not downtime for me - I already had an aftermarket spare) with the better EN-EL3e - the battery to suit the D200 and D700 - in fact, I still use the battery that came as a replacement (and it's still reporting as in brand new condition).
