You may well have received an e-mail about this (if you registered your cameras) but there will probably be some here who haven't registered or who bought second hand and haven't had the chance to do so.

Not the first time Nikon batteries have had a similar problem - IIRC, they're actually manufactured by Sony in China. I know that some EN-EL3s had a similar problem soon after I bought my D70 - my EN-EL3 was replaced within a couple of days (not downtime for me - I already had an aftermarket spare) with the better EN-EL3e - the battery to suit the D200 and D700 - in fact, I still use the battery that came as a replacement (and it's still reporting as in brand new condition).

My EN-EL15 is one of the group being recalled.

I was about to buy a spare battery. How can I be sure I will not get one of those being recalled.

I never got an email about this and my camera is registered.
Nikon Rumours published the recall notice from Nikon back on 24 April.
Got to wonder how cameras sold 6 months later still have these batteries with them.
 
Buy from bricks'n'mortar and check the serial number?

I'm fairly sure that REPUTABLE internet sellers (forget e-bay, I would almost expect any that came from there to be either fake or faulty!) would refund or exchange any that should have been recalled, or you could return any in the list to Nikon for replacement. When I had a battery that was recalled, the aftermarket one (from 7dayshop) didn't suffer from the same problem as the recalled on may have had, so I kept on using it. Kept an eye on it while charging (that was when the problem was apparent, IIRC) and made sure it was supervised while charging - no problem, it's still going strong!
 
I bought from a well known and reputable UK dealer (just emailed them about the battery).

Not knowing about the problem I would never have dreamt about checking. I'd have thought that Nikon should have told dealers to check the batteries before selling the cameras.
 
I have made a khyber pass of myself. My battery is not from the affected group. Seems I could use a refresher course in reading & counting.

I know I got an e-mail from Nikon about the D70's battery - I still have it on my old 'puter.
 
i was always told to buy genuine batteries, just goes to show.
