Hi
ive ordered a nikon d700 with these 3 lenses

Nikon 85mm f1.8 AF-D
Nikon AF D 35-70mm f2.8 Zoom
Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED

im now regretting it after reading about how good the nikon d600 is
ive bought the nikon d700 from amazon warehouse as new condition for £820
i dont often crop so is it worth the extra cost and go for the d600 with all those extra megapixels, would the image quality be much better than the d700?

Thanks

I've never used a D600, and the D700 may be a bit long in the tooth but it is still an awesome body. What body are you moving from?

imho, I think it's a great camera & you won't regret it.

It all depends on what you want from your camera. Better image quality, better handling, better build, etc

I went from a canon 650d with 40mm prime and the kit zoom
i take a lot of street and portrait shots

D700 has superior build, AF, ISO handling, controls to name a few. You won't regret it, though it will feel heavy compared to the 650D.

Both bodies are a big improvement over you 650d. The D600 is lighter than the D700 and slightly smaller which might be easier to carry around

Also what you ve paid for the D700 is a good price especially if it is in a good condition. A D600 will cost you £1300 new

with the nikon d700 being only 12mp do you think i will notice the difference in image quality over the d600 when viewing on my 18 inch screen ?

Thanks

also do you think i would need to add to my lenses?

Thanks

As long as you don't want to print out HUGE wall-sized posters, you'll struggle to notice.

Unless you view your images at 1 to 1, or print large I dont think you will notice it as a problem. What is the resolution of your 650d by the way?

I've owned the D700 and the D600. If your D700 is really "as new" then that's a very good price. The D600 gains a few more megapixels over the D700 but the finder isn't quite as big, it has a limited AF area and it has fewer manual controls. The D700 is the better tool. The only reason to upgrade is for the extra sensor resolution.

Does the D600 have the same viewfinder as that of the D800?

From Nikon UK

Nikon D600: High-performance viewfinder with approx. 100% frame coverage and 0.7x magnification (50 mm f/1.4 lens at infinity, -1.0 m-1).

Nikon D800: 100% viewfinder coverage, Approx. 0.7 x (50 mm f/1.4 lens at infinity, -1.0 m-1)

Nikon D700: Approx. 95%. Approx. 0.72x (50mm f/1.4 lens at infinity; -1.0 m-1)

Does the 0.02 extra magnification of the D700 make a big difference? I have never owned a D700 but I d rather have the 100% coverage of the D600/D800 over the D700's 95% coverage.

You won't regret the D700 and that is a very good price - I fall in love with mine every time I pick it up - Cheers Robert

I've had my D700 for a while now and last week bought a D600 as a second full frame camera.

Last night had a chance to use them both side by side at a concert we were shooting.

I put all my photos into Lightroom this morning and I honestly cannot tell without looking at the EXIF information which camera was which. So in short IQ is near as dammit on both. I guess ISO performance is a bit better on the D600 at the upper end but I wasn't pushing ISO to the limits last night.

My only gripe is the AF is noticeably poorer than the D700. The camera was often hunting in situations I know my D700 would have nailed. In fact thinking back I can't remember the D700 hunting around at all last night but the D600 did.

My takeaway from that is for action photography at low light then the D600 may disappoint. Certainly when it locks on and takes a shot the results are great. But I did miss a few shots because of the AF.

I've a wedding next weekend so will see if I have the same problems during the first dance.

So given what you've paid for the D700 I think you'll be very happy.

Just switched to a d700 from a d300s. D700 has 95% coverage and d300s 100% coverage. Personally I cant tell the difference apart from the d700 seems brighter.

The viewfinder of a full frame body will always be brighter due to the bigger sensor.

Sorry I should have known better than to make such a statement without checking my facts first. Perhaps technically it isn't 'bigger'. What I should have said is that it certainly seems bigger and maybe brighter too. I also found the D700's rounded cup to be more comfortable than the D600's rectangular cup.

Thanks for all the replys guys its all been very helpfull
iv'e received the d700 today and it looks brand new i would guess it is brand new with 0 shutter count unfortunately it hasnt come with anything else all accessories are missing!!
ive been in touch with amazon and they have given me 7.5% discount which makes the camera only £757.25 ive ordered a non geniune battery charger and lead at a cost of £9
downloaded the instructions and software ive got a usb lead so i only need the strap.
any ideas where i can get a good strap or should i go for the nikon d700 one which is a mouth watering £25!!

If you decide that you'd like to sell it and put the money towards a D600, please do let me know. I rather miss my D700.

If it really was 0 shutter count then that is a bargain.

Personally I wouldn't go for a standard neck strap. You might as well get yourself a strap like the Black Rapid, Sun Sniper, Q-Strap or Optech. Most people find those straps more comfortable and practical than the standard one which gets shipped with the camera.

slas. Check the serial numbers on the camera and box, against the exif data, just to be sure everything is kosher.

Well,

If you decide to off-load, give me first refusal, was going for a D800, but thinking I'd like the 700

Sounds like you've got a great deal on the body! (good to know it all checks out. Peace of mind is worth a fortune!)
You'll be VERY happy with the 24-70 i'm sure. Have fun.

Joby make a sling type one which fixes to the tripod bush. It's quite brilliant on my D700 with 24-70 F2.8 attached. It's a weighty combination but extremely comfortable with this strap. Best I've had. :D

Well, if you are interested. I have sold my D700 and still have original D700 box with all unused original accessory, incl. unused D700 strap, BM-6 LCD cover, manuals, CDs, video/USB cables and maybe other bits. Just the camera, charger and battery is not there.

If interested, please PM me.
