Evening,

Just got hold of a really good example of one of these and simply felt compelled to write about it!

Granted I've literally only started playing but as soon as my eye was put to the viewfinder hooooolllllyyyyy sssssshhhhhhh*****t. The scale of what you can see through the V/finder is nothing short of staggering! I still cannot believe you can only see 95% Coverage (I'd better stay away from a D3).

Fired of a few pics of my soon to be up for sale D300 at 800 ISO, images are nothing short of staggering! Love the sound it makes when it fires of a shot too!!

The D300 was a fantastic camera but this thing it.... well it's really nothing short of breathtaking!

I'll be back with more once I've had some fun at the weekend!! :D

Thank you to the seller - you know who you are!!

Resistance was obviously futile!

Nice one Paul, you'll have a lot of fun with it.

Hehe! Had to Colin - don't worry the rest of your wedding fee is safe ;)

Just keep me away from your D3 when I utter the words - "Colin, go on let me have a quick go!"

PS not a word to Anna when we next meet! I'm hoping she can't tell the difference!

Might be after a D300 if the price / condition was right. What condition is yours and how much will you be asking? Feel free to reply, pm or just ignore me!

She'll be able to tell, they can always spot it when we try and smuggle in some new "shiny kit"

ISO 800 - pah! That's nothing. Crank it up to 6400 somewhere really dark and gloomy and THEN you may wax lyrical...:) Look at this...shot with my D700 hand held at 6400. If you can find noise on this you're a more observant man than me. More here:

I recently swapped my D300 for the D700. That was 6 months ago, no comments from my wife yet and she has used both

pablob, you can change your camera bag settings now :)

I'm just behind you :) saving like mad for my D700 and 24-70mm !! Hope you enjoy it

You just want to make us jealous eh!

Enjoy your new toy :)

Shame you got a D700 today....MPB have a post on their twitter page that tomorrow a.m. they will be selling D3's (starting from £2099). :bonk:

Did they say for how long ?

Just out of interest, if you were to take a picture of nothing extreme (i.e not high ISO), maybe a cricket match on a sunny day or something similar, and then produce an A4 print, would you notice much difference between the D300 and D700?

No spending that money on a camera is beyond me at this stage! I'd rather the D700 and hopefully a 17-35 to pair up with it for l/scapes!

Maybe a little bit but after just 5 mins of using this thing I could tell it was special!

D700/D3 was built for weddings

I hope it was built for portraits also?

It's pretty much identical to D3 dude, just built in vertical grip and slightly diff button layout. Other than that - you'd use each camera exactly the same.

Which is why the D700 is such a bargain :)

Edit: It's built for anything really, done a lot of studio work with D700 and it was flawless. AF on it (and D3), is stunning. take the time to learn the best set-ups. PM me if you have any questions down the line.

Good stuff! I have a grip from the D300 -

Cool I have a Poor man's D3!! lol

EDIT - You'll be getting PM's shortly!

No. Except in theory the crop factor on the D300, but that depends on the lenses you were using. In reality you wouldn't notice a single difference. But the second the sun dips below the horizon, you're on a different planet with the D700.

Congrats ... D700 is easily the best body I have owned, build, feel, usability, speed, IQ are all exceptional. First one I've where I haven't thought it'll do for six months and then upgrade. A modern classic.

Yeah, it's got weather protection, just don't get it wet LMAO

Durable Magnesium alloy body: moisture and dust resistant.

That's off the D700 page on the Nikon website.
I guess it means that YOU should be confident that you can use it in the rain, but don't blame US if water gets inside and blows it up.
I think phrases like that are designed to confuse, although the D700 and D300 are better sealed against the elements than say my D80 I'm not sure it's ever been quantified.

Also af-s lenses tend to have a rubber gasket to add a bit of protection, if you use a lens without this, and there are plenty about, then your weather sealing pretty much goes out of the window anyway.

It's like hypoallergenic pet foods, when you actually look into it, the term can mean pretty much nothing.

I'd say that if you were planning to use the D700 without the grip then it is a bargain. If not, then there are enough differences between the D3 and the D700 to make it worth the additional investment for a D3. The one thing the D700 and grip combination has in its favour is the additional control pad which I find easier to use in portrait format than the D3.

No, just those awful stage lights the muso's like to use. There was RED! yellow and green.
I have another I'll dig out on the other computer in a mo, shows just how overpowering the RED! lights were.

Yep, it was red...
ISO6400, 1/125s, f/2.2, 50mm.

White balance pulled right down to 2000k in raw converter.

Thanks for the explanation cyclone. At least it's one area where my E-3 wins then... hehehehe

Olympus say "dust and splash proof". So I guess you could say it got "splashed" lol. I have to admit that splash proof sounds more hefty than moisture resistant.

Its magnesium alloy construction combined with dust and splashproof protection lets the E-3 go wherever the action is: No matter at a rainy football game or on the dusty plains of the Serengeti. The power grip and a wide selection of lenses are equally protected against the elements, thereby considerably reducing the risk of downtime as the E-3 is always ready for the next assignment no matter the conditions. And with a shutter life of 150,000 operations, professionals will really come to appreciate this model’s extreme reliability.

I think we should all demand actual figures. Does anybody know of any tests that have been done?

I did a quick test with my D700 last night, it was really to try out Custom WB which I have never used before but I have a show coming up in a couple of weeks at an indoor arena with varied lighting so I wanted to learn how to use it. Anyway, this was taken at ISO3200 with the 70-200mm on the camera, f/2.8 and 1/25th second handheld at 200mm (you gotta love VR :D). The sensor on this and the D3 never fails to amaze me at higher ISO values.
