Hey all,

I'm going to sell my D90, and upgrade to a FX body. I've got my eyes on the D700.

The best price i've come across so far is £1725 from Pixmania and then 6% cashback by going through quidco, so £103.50 back.

Has anyone come across any better price than £1725?

Are they grey imports from Pixmania?

Oh and to answer your question, the price with cashback is pretty good and one that i've not seen beaten.

I dont think Pixmania import some of their products, however, I will find out.

Yeah the price with cashback does seem very appealing, just scouting around for better deals with/without cashback..

I have to look at getting a few 1-2GB CF cards as well

Quick update: Pixmania have now priced the D700 to £1749, yesterday it was £1725...

Ah yes, however I believe you cannot mix offers with quidco.

The most competitive price i've come across is through Misfuds, weighing in at £1729 for the body only - but theres no cashback there.

If I remember correctly, you sold your D700? How come?

Because he got a D3! :)

I'm the proud recipient of his D700 and all I can say is that it is well well worth the money. Cheapest I found new when looking was about £1650 but that was Dixons Tax Free.

Pixmania sell 'UK spec' (i.e. grey import) products. I wouldn't use them for a product like this tbh.

I just called them and the sales rep told me that everything comes from France.

However she did she that the 1st year warranty would be with pixmania, and the second year would be covered by Nikon...

That wouldn't be Nikon UK though. Believe me, they are a painful company to work with when it comes to their lovely 1st year 'warranty'.

Stick with the UK offerings. :)

Currys has a promo code to save £100.

Thanks for pointing that out, that does put currys as the top contender at the moment. I should actually see if my local camera store (SRS) can come up with something more competitive then £1799, I think i'll go there today.

I think you're right, despite having a good price I dont want to have any difficulties should the camera need to be sorted out.

Going back a few posts to the Currys link, the price on Camera Price Buster already includes the £100 off, as their normal retail price is £1899.

I'm going to go with buying the D700 from my local camera shop (SRS) because they have price matched the other cheapest retailer (Mifsuds), plus ill save a few quid on delivery as well.

Looks like its changed since I posted that link, as the price was 1799 and then 100 discount. Such a shame :(

Personally I am waiting, the £ is doing well against the other main currencies, and things keep going like this, prices should be coming down soon!

For something like the D700, 1-2 GB cards are too small IMHO. 4 or 8GB would be a better option, unless you only shoot a small amount of pictures per visit/session

I both agree and disagree with you here,

The main reason i'd like to have a collection of smaller cards is so that when I do lots of shoots, or a wedding is a perfect example. I do not want to risk losing all of the images if my memory cards were to ever mess up. That's something i've learnt from the photographer I assist, and it's a much safer thing to do. Although, it can be difficult when you cant remember if you have backed up this particular card onto the laptop when you need another card!

I may go for a couple of 4GB cards instead, that is also another option if I can get them at a decent price.

I have to agree with you. I keep smaller memory cards, but more of them. The larger they get, generally the slower they are. Also I find the price is around the same, 2x2gb high speed cards VS 1x4gb lower speed.

With the size of the D700 14-bit raw files, I'd go for multiple 4Gb cards tbh.

 If the class is the same then it's the same bus speed regardless of size.

You are more likely to have 'cheaper' cards fail than decent branded ones. I stick with 3x decent 16gb cards and use a auto-backup HD device when on site. None of this card swapping malarky, which introduces more wear-n-tear and may ultimately lead to them failing sooner anyway.

I've got a 4 gig and 16 gig Sandisk Extreme III cards in my D700 and can't spot any noticeable difference in performance.

That is a good point, I have actually been looking at buying 2 4GB Sandisk Extreme III, £19.99 each seems like a good deal, but I will shop around a bit further.

Just to update you all

I bought the Nikon D700 Body from RGB Tech for £1699.99.

The guy on the phone was very helpful, great service all round from them.

Very happy with the D700!
