Nikon D700 still worth it?

Im just briwsing eBay for a cheap second hand body and wondering about the good old work horse that was the d700. You can get well described ones for a few hundred quid now but has time treated it well? Would a second hand , more modern Aps-c be a better buy?

D700 is it worth it?...........you bet it is, one of Nikon's finest ever cameras, will go down in history

If apparent reach and a higher pixel count are on the wants/needs list, an APS-C body might be the answer. If your list is more wide angle and high ISO, the D700 should fit the hole in your bag admirably!
 
I don't have a bag to fill! Buying a house back in Jan I had to flog off most of my gear to fund it.

Now I'm in and unpacked I want to get back into things again. I just want something to fill a gap while I save up for an 810.
 
I had a d700 twice and a d600, d800 and d4.

I would spend a little extra to get a D600 if possible.

The image quality, ISO performance and cropping ability are noticeably superior.

And I would wait for the d750 replacement rather that get a d810 but that's up to you obviously.

There’s a cheap D700 in the classifieds.
Nothing to do with me.
 
Actually wasn't there an issue with d600"s and oily sensors or was that all sorted?

Since you're heading down the FF route, I'd definitely go for the D700 over a newer Dx body.
 
D700 has much nice skin colours (and colours in general, I think) compared to all the more modern sensors.

I still look at my D700 images with a sense of awe, there is just something magical about them. I had a D610 which is a vast improvement in terms of dynamic range and resolution but somehow lack something I felt.

Probably a case of rose tinted glasses as I didn't keep the D610 long enough to get attached to it, or conversely maybe I wasn't attached to it enough to stop me switching to m43, or maybe its because the D610 (and newer cameras) are so good they're just bland. But still, the D700 is a fab camera.

It affected the first few thousand images - sometimes.

It is extremely unlikely that you could find a D600 that is still susceptible to that problem.
 
Would have a D700 all day long compared to to the D6XX series, the a.f on the D700 is much better.

Would probably still have at least one of them if it had more than one card slot. Still a very capable camera, although they can feel a bit clunky to use compared to the newer models.

Probably the best bang for buck dslr Nikon have ever made and so cheap now, seen one sell on Facebook with less than 30k shutter count for under £300.
 
D700 - a few hundred quid - if you mean £200 or £300 - then, provided that it is in good working order, you cannot go wrong ......... but it will feel big and heavy

I'd get a D750 if you can get one at a good price ........ I use it more than my D810

Split the difference and get a D800? 90% of the D810 for just over half the price.
 
Well I just won a reasonably low shutter count D700 for just shy of £260 so that will do me for a few months till I can save up. Just happy to have a camera again:)
 
That is a really excellent price, a great camera too. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
 
D700 is a classic. A great camera, I only sold mine as it was sat in the bag most of the time due to my D700 and taking my X100T out a lot more. Great IQ and ISO performance, built like a tank.
 
I have many fond memories of my D700, one of the best cameras I ever owned.

I'd happily still use one.
