Well thought I'd say 'Hi' in here as well. I got a D700 just over a week ago but the lens I got with it was faulty, no problem got refunded so now thinking of new lens, well second hand one.

16-35 is interesting but think it is to much at the moment

20-35mm f2.8 is very interesting the only think I have aganst it is weight.

18-35mm f3.3-f4.5 is the one I think I plump for.

35mm f2 I love this lens I have a similar one of 2 other film cameras and this was the one I orginally got but had to return it.

Any thoughts on any of the above lens?

I've used and owned the 18-35 on my D700. Not the greatest, but I reckon fantastic value for money. Considering how little I shoot wide I'd have another.

Wish I had the money for a 16-35 :(

Although I have now sold a few more of my DX lenses and now waiting for my 85mm 1.8 to come! :D

Tempted to buy a 50mm 1.4 AF as the 1.8 version I have atm isn't mine

I was going to buy the 24-70mm f2.8 but now seriously think the 16-35mm & an 85mm f1.8 may be a better option with the D700. I don't think the 24-70mm would excell for me either as a wide or portrait lens and think the 85mm for portraits and 16-35mm for wide shots would be a better option plus roughly the same price as the 24-70mm:thinking:

I currently have...

Nikon 35mm f1.8g DX
Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 DX
Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 vr II
Tamron macro 90mm f2.8

I reckon I should sell the 35mm & 10-20mm DX lenses and replace with the 16-35mm & 85mm lenses. Then I can use the D700 for all types of shooting and have the D90 just as a back up when 2 bodies are needed for close ups and portraits.

Maybe after this I will stop wanting to buy equipment:help:

Must admit I'm starting to think along the same lines. I have a 28-70 and a 24-70 at the moment (long story). Both are utterly superb but I'll still use my 50mm prime when I can. I keep wondering if I'd be better off with an 85, a 50 and a 16-35. Seem to cover all the bases nicely without costing ludicrous money.

By the way, the 28-70 is well worth a look if you're struggling to justify the price of a 24-70. There is absolutely nothing in it in terms of IQ. The 28-70 seems to be built better. It's a good option.

Thanks for the link it is a really useful website.

Your welcome.... Takes a bit of getting used to - but glad it helped

Killed my D7000 and was on the verge of ordering another one but decided on a whim to get the D700 instead. Was all sorted for glass for dx and will obviously have to change most over now. Loving my new toy though.

Nope, mines still 1.02.

Considering it was done 3 days ago, I don't think one that's been sat in a shop will have later firmware on it.

Just done mine. Can't see any differences really. The website just says a bug causing under exposure has been fixed. Never encountered it though.

 Me neither. Been googling and cant find anything on it. Really cant see them bringing an update out just for underexposure problems after all this time :cuckoo:

Just found this on What Digital Camera's web site saying .....

It's unclear at the moment what exact changes and improvements have been made, but Nikon states the 'update makes various changes to improve the operation of your camera.'

That really helps :bang:

I have. Only when using high speed frame advance. Frequently get 1 out of 3 underexposed....I'm shooting show jumping indoors this weekend. I'll let you know if it's any better.

Same. I don't think I have ever had an underexposed image that wasn't my fault.
Must be an issue for some though if they feel the need to fix it!

Seems its Europe only too. Its not been released in the US.

Typical, just to make me look like an idiot, they have just released it on the USA site.

New firmware update from Nikon, decided to leave mine as it is

Well I shot at 800 yesterday and didn't notice any difference. I'll try higher tonight.
I don't see why Nikon would fiddle with something like that and not mention it in the release notes.

I didnt realise the update will put all your setting back to default. I think if all the update is to fix the very rare underexposed occasions, i will give it a miss. Ive got my D700 to the settings that suit me and took me a year to configure :shake:

does anybody think the high iso has improved.

If you had some exposure issues and the firmware has fixed it, it might give the impression things are better at a given ISO as your exposure is niow spot on, as we all know the best way to get the best high ISO results is to nail the exposure spot on, underexposing introduces noise.

hasnt reset mine.

Pretty sure mine stayed the same.
I spent an hour on Saturday putting everything back to how I wanted it after its trip to Nikon, where they reset it all. I wouldn't be a happy camper if I had to do it all again.

Just double checked and yes, everything is as it was before the upgrade.

I just got a D700 last week. Very happy with it. :D

Should I do the firmware update (and how do I do that?)
