I was quite impressed, I must say. Just for fun I took this at ISO 25600. It's noisy for sure (I've tried to clean it up a little) but is not unpleasant. The room was almost dark when I shot this.

I know the feeling. I have gone from 6 lenses down to 3 to fund this. Think it's worth it on balance though.

That's for sure. I was looking at some old stuff I shot on my Canon 7D at high ISO. D700 is SO much cleaner. Glad I switched into the warm glow of THE DARK SIDE.

I'm getting ready to duck the flak from any Canon die hards that might read this..
 
Graham - just checking the exif of that last shot. How did you get a 1/45th shutter speed? Mine goes from 1/40 to 1/50..

You can choose the increments the shutter speed goes up in one of the menus. I'll take a look later if I get a chance.

ah, i'll dig around and have a look.

edit: can't find it ..well, i have it set to 1/3 increments which i'm assuming would give me the widest selection of speeds, but for some reason i don't have 1/45

Mine is on half steps, go's 1/30, 1/45 then 1/60. I just tried it on third steps and as you say it then goes, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50. That'll explain it then.

I prefer working in half steps, I find it easier to follow.
 
Righto, I have my first D700 related questions.

Firstly, I'd like a hard plastic screen protector like I had on my D300. I assume that a genuine Nikon one is available from somewhere but ebay is full of third party ones. Are those ok? If not, where can I get a genuine one from?

And lastly I think I need a new bag. These FX lenses are big! Any recommendations to fit the following criteria.

Less than £100 ideally
Rucksack
Not obviously a camera bag
Ideally a non-camera section for waterproofs and sarnies
Must fit a D700 with 70-200 attached and also carry, 50mm 1.4, 28-70 2.8, 18-35, flash, Lee filter kit, timer and other assorted guff

Lowepro Fastpack 350 looks good but not certain it's big enough.

Any other ideas.

Get a GGS protector. So much better than those awful plastic things supplied by Nikon.
 
Didn't realise there were two types - definitely the one in Ozei's link. A lot cheaper from ebay though.

I would go with the ones from Simon @ Crooked Imaging... At least that way you'll know for sure that its not some piece of 5h17 from HK.....

Plus he's a decent fella :thumbs:

Ditto (mine came from him).

Some of the others show pics of two-piece kits when they're actually single-piece.
 
Here's a link to the ebay seller I bought mine from - £6.50 delivered - that's for the set - 100% genuine as far as I'm concerned and the seller has 99.9% positive feedback on 45K transactions!

Edit: just had another look at the one in the ebay link - it's actually NOT the one I got from this seller, and not the type I am recommending. I haven't seen this "3rd Gen" type previously. What I like about the one I have is that you literally don't know it's there, they fit that well.

That's a type III - how much is the type II? I can't find one in the seller's shop.

Edit: there's one for a D300 but not for a D700.

You should be fine with the 350 Graham, I have the 200 that houses the D700 with 70-200 VRII and sb900, light meter and a host of other items. They are comfortable when in use.

Having said that I also have tamrac pro 9 shoulder bag for the other body and 24-70, I think a peli on wheels might be required soon to save my back lol.

its a shame that there wasn't another image of just how dark it was just to show just how awesome the d700 is..

Hello all, I have just purchased a D700 with the fantastic 24-70 2.8, can't wait to get out and about with it.

What would you top tip for the D700 be?

Indeed but the exif data does give some clues to how dark.

F/1.4
1/45
iso 25600

So in other words, if I'd been at iso 200 and F/4 say, It would have been something in the order of a 16 sec exposure.

It might depend on what camera you're coming from. I came from a D300 and, as discussed a couple of pages back, there really wasn't anything to learn as they're very similar in operation.

If you're coming from a crop sensor, try cranking the iso right up like I did. Amazing results in low light. I knew it would be good but really cannot beleive just how good.

I have been reading this thread with much interest - Having just sold my D300 and LOVED 17 55 f2.8 dx I am hoping buying the D700 is a smart move....

Plenty here seem very happy....


I am buying a New Body -


I have a little bit of doubt as to the release of the D800 or whever they will call it........truth is I want it to be 2k plus so its out of my price range BUT I shudder to think if it gets released with a similar price tag and a massive feature set ...........dont want to be kicking myself


any thoughts by other late adopters of the 700.....already
 
What would you want that the D700 doesn't have then :shrug:

Clues from the States suggest a price of nearer £25-2600 for the D800....

Yeah - I have just been looking at the speculation on various websites.......I wonder if they will still produce the D700 alongside it.....

as rumors say there will be 2 models - one with AA one without, the one without will be more expensive ( over£2500) and one with closer to £2000.

Im already thinking about selling d700 but am unable as I need few photo-shoots coming in next few weeks. and just wait for d800..would be well 'angry' if they wouldn't announce it ;D
 
My D700 is on order and on it's way this week. I'm bouncing up and down every time there's a knock at the door.

I'm upgrading to full frame from a D90. Loved that camera but want to go full frame to take advance of wide angle work plus better ISO performance.

Most of my lens are FX compatible, 35mm f2D , 50mm 1.4g, 85mm 1.8D, but my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 isn't unless I use the DX crop mode which as I understand reduce the MP to about 5-6MP, or compose around the lens vingnetting that will occur. Some tests required to see the results.

Wish I could drop a £1000 on 24-70mm 2.8, but the coffers dot allow it yet.

I've been wondering that myself, I think they might just up the price of the D400 to £1500 or so to fill the gap

I think the non-AA model is wishful thinking and there's no way the D800 will be £2k, the D700 rrp is quite a bit more than that already...
 
My D700 arrived this morning and I am so pleased with it so far. I've moved from DX to FX and only after half a day I can't work out why I didn't do it sooner.
