hi people,

im new to this forum and i have a question to ask. well, i own a D700 for quite some time now. and im very very pleased with it. have served me well and the quality of the photos are just brilliant. one thing that i noticed recently that there's some small dusts inside some of my lenses. so i decided to do a test shots to see if the dusts which is stuck inside the lenses would affect the image quality. surprisingly, the dusts inside the lens makes no difference on image quality. but what bothers me now is there's now dusts inside the sensor. so i did all the procedures to check on the dusts on the sensor and blow it off with my trusty blower. it did scare off some of the dusts, but there are still some stubborn ones which still manage to stay put. its not visible if i use large apertures..say F1.8 but when i went above F9, its very visible. well this bothers me so much since i love to capture landscape shots.

so i watched a few 'self-cleaning-method' videos on youtube, but im not sure whether to do it myself or i should send it to a shop for cleaning.

the question here is, should i clean it myself? or should i send it to the shop for cleaning? and if i send it to the shop, how much will it cost me? thank you in advance guys.
if you have a shop near by that does it and trust them get them to do it, normally about £25, ehich is probably about the cost of all the stuff you need to but to clean it lots of times,
just remember to keep the cam facing down hen chaning lenses and welcome:D.

If you're unsure, don't do it yourself! I'm looking to get mine done soon, never done it before so will be trusting an authorised dealer to do it for me.

thank you again :D if its going to cost me around £25, then that should not be a problem to pay the shop. im just afraid its going to cost me a few hundred pounds :|

one more question, how long does it usually takes for it to get cleaned up? im sorry, but yes, i NEVER send it for cleaning before. i do blow it every now and then but since there's some stubborn particles, its high time i send it for proper cleaning.

i thought so too. im not so sure on cleaning it myself. im afraid im going to messed up with the sensor and that's surely not a good idea. if i have some free time tomorrow i will surely go to the camera shop and ask them to clean it for me :D

Fixation site say they do it for about £66 which seems a bit steep. You can get the whole shutter replaced for a few hundred so it won't be close to that. Shop around and see what the best price is.

i guess i'll do that. see which shop can give me the best of the best deal :D hopefully i'll get it cleaned soon. TBH i cant sleep well at night thinking that there's dusts on my sensor! :|

BTW, the D700+50 1.4G looks sexy in my opinion :D (not from my flickr)

suprised at that dean. my 28-70mm nikon(not the beast) is ok not 5 star but it only cost me £40 delivered.

Further testing reveals it to be pin sharp wide open, but front focusing massively. I've added -20 adjustments and it's better, but still not perfect. It'll have to go back unfortunately.

thats a shame, is -20 still not enough, what supprised me about the 28-70d non afs is how quiet and quick the af is.

close but no cigar. I wonder how much a fix would be?

I Find Mr. Rockwell's site contradictory. Am I the only one??

(Assuming of course Uncle Ken is Ken Rockwell???)

Firstly, Hello - I've just signed up here after a recent D700/24-120mm purchase. So far, I love the lens & the Camera is a joy to use.
I'd agree with the above comment after spending many hours deciding which camera to buy. KR's site was my first stopping place but I found Thom Hogan's site (http://www.bythom.com/) to be more useful & his e-book D700 manual is pretty comprehensive.

I'd be interested to know what people here would consider for a next lens and whether it is best to go for Nikon lenses or are there comparable 3rd party lenses out there that perform well?

Thanks for any input

hi pete, and welcome, lenses depend on what you shot and budget..

Mainly landscapes/animals/wildlife - budget is a consideration but I'd rather pay a bit more for quality or a lens that suits rather than compromise and end up being disappointed later on (if that makes sense) ie buying an xyz brand 70-300mm lens only to find out it's only really sharp up to 200mm

Take a look at the 28-300 VR. It's a fairly recent release but getting quite a good following. Also consider the 70-200 VR2 maybe add the new Mk2 x2 extender. £££'s

Trev - you do mean the TC-20E III dont you which is ££££'s (xtra £ there ) or for the newbie £400+ :coat: :exit:

moe, i had mine done by devon camera center last time and it cost £25, also they told me to come back in a couple of hours which was fine as shopping anyway.

sadly i dont have enough time to go shop around for prices today. and i need to use the camera tomorrow for an event. hopefully the shops here provides that kind of fast services as u mentioned scott  and thank you for all the information again

Oooops I ordered one! ;)

 Congrats Roger :nikon:

 A D700 or any of the mass of lens recomendations that have been mentioned

I would assume that its a D700 due to you wanting one.... If so was it a used one or did you bite the bullet & went brand spanking new

Yep I'm a nosey sod aint I

Thats almost as sexy as my D700 with my Sigma 85mm 1.4 attached :naughty:

 Will this now involve a mass influx of pictures of what their D700 looks sexy with a particular lens now  :naughty: :p

haha Hey Trig yeah a spanky new D700, ordered yesterday from DigitalRev, Germany still has higher prices at the mo so went with DR I hear they're rep here ain't bad....

Saying that though I got a 'Risk Assessment email from DR this morning and had to send back copies of passport and utility bill, fair enough I suppose have to be sure about things...

Ordered a Meike grip as couldnt quite budget for the Nikon.

Would probably have bought UK stock but to be honest I was really surprised how many UK camera companies aren't allowing payment by Paypal.

Have a 50mm 1.4G and a couple of other lenses, going to see how the Tokina 11-16mm fairs on DX I hear it's useable at 15-16mm before I decide whether to sell/ trade.

By the way check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/rogermbyrne/page28/ some pictures of a wedding we did back when I was a partner in a Diving center in Egypt, Dolphins!!!! ;)

Will do Rog

Congrats on your new purchase - There are/seems to be a few Nikon MB-D10's popping upin the classifieds....

Hi Pete, welcome and congrats on your purchase of a D700; a cracking camera. The 70-200mm f2.8 mentioned above is a really great lens but depending on your budget you might also consider the Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED. I'm fortunate to have both lenses and have been really pleasantly surprised with the quality of the 70-300, and of course it's smaller and lighter too, if that's a consideration.

I think the D700 is superb and does everything that I want BUT there are a couple of additions I would like. An SD slot and a thunderbolt socket. Canon have basically stated that they are going to use them so lets hope that Nikon do too. Imagine downloading 8Gb worth of images in whatever the maximum speed of the card is. If the D700x/750/800/400 does not have those then I'll pick up another D700 instead.

b****r, yes I did mean the mk3....sorry ££££'s

Just got my D700 ;)

Question?, my D90 had something called Easy ISO which allowed me to be in Aperture priority and control the ISO with the rear dial.

The D700 doesn't have this, is it a case of shut up and get used to the weird left thumbed reach for the ISO button or do you have any other tips?

Hit info button twice and change ISO from there. Or, assign the FN or Preview button to access top item in My Menu (set ISO to top item).

Thanks for the suggestions!, all seem a bit fiddly I think i'm just gonna have to get used to that left ISO button...

I got fed up with the left ISO button (left hand is always under the lens anyway) and always used the 'double info' trick on the 700 - much easier.

(PS. D3 series cameras don't have the double info facility - I did ask Nikon to add it as a firmware update but they ignored me :bang:).

hmm for some reason I thought my ML-L3 remote would work with the D700 but it doesn't, any recommendations for a wireless remote?

yeah I'd need another transmitter and another shutter release cable as the one I have doesn't work with the D700, just seems all a bit messy with RF 602's

Why? receiver with cable attached to camera and transmitter in hand.
