Well went to get a 24-70 or 85 1.4d today to go with my d700 as i had just been using my 50 1.8d.
They didnt have either so ended up walking with a 85 1.4g as it was only £100 more than the 24-70.
Only had a small play with it on the train on the way home but it seems like a cracking lens, cant wait to use it in anger.
nice lens, post some pics when you et a chance please.

The 24-70mm is a much more versatile lens though, the 85 f/1.4 is stunning but quite limited in it's usage.

If all you shoot is portraits it's ideal but for more varied use I'd have gone for the 24-70mm

i know.
i had the 24-70 for a few days and found that it always had it at between 50-70mm.
90% of what i shoot is portraits, and found that i has the 50mm on my d90 all the time, except when we went traveling.
next buy will be the24-70 or a wider prime maby a 20 or 24mm

hello guys, just a quick question, my D700's back LCD is not functioning. what seems to be the problem? the top LCD is working just fine but i cant view images at all! the back LCD completely shut down. any of u guys had the same problem as i do? need help.

Check Playback Menu/Image Review is On
Can you review by pressing the play button at the top left, rear of camera.
Not trying to teach you to suck eggs but sometimes there's a simple answer.

I'd take the 85 over the 24-70 any day of the week, I have the D version but it's still a cracking combo. the 24-70 is good, but for portraits I still prefer my 80-200.

I spent the wee small hours this morning reading through this thread, that was an expensive mistake

Speaking of which, the more research I do into the 24-70 the more posts about recurring faults I seem to come across. I didn't have one problem with my 17-55, but the 24-70 seems to have the potential to suffer from far more maladies than a £1200 ought to, which makes me wonder if I shouldn't just buy £1200 worth of primes instead....

My 24-70 is fine if that helps?

Consider The Beast 28-70. It's a fabulous, heavyweight well built bit of loveliness. If you can live without the 4mm at the Wide end ! Probably never part with mine.

Or the 35 - 70 f2.8D, should be around £300 used

Only if I can get it on permanent loan :naughty:

See that's another problem, I'm really enjoying having the wee light 50 f/1.4 or 35 f/2 and no MB-D10 on the D700......

I find my 24-70 has a tendency to hunt a fair bit in low light. I've never been sold on it.

 What faults (as I sold my "beast" to get this 24-70 :'( :suspect:)

Same here - when I get the damm thing out of the bag that is :$

:agree: Sometimes I wish I never got shot of mine now - wished I tried it out on the D700 before selling it - but we all learn by our mistakes I spose:bonk:

So this eyepiece thing is worth getting then? How much is it?

Yeah I'd say it is ..... Price depends on where you shop really - WE have them in for £23.99

Oooh, a new toy. I'll get one.

Who's 'we' anyway? PM me if you need to!

It totally lost me for about 5 mins then... Then the penny dropped (WE) :$

Light leaks, Sticking zoom, Noisy Zoom, Stretching rubber grip

Thats ok then - thought it was something serious

Dont have any of those probs with mine - altho I will try the light leak thou as never seen that before, with any lens coming to think about it...

The 24-70 sticking zoom problem might be limited to older copies, the repair data from LensRentals.com seems to suggest that the problem has been eliminated in newer copies. It's one of those lenses that I wouldn't buy second hand if I were to buy one having looked at the repair stats, put it that way...

The Nikon 24-70, which gave us a horrible time with sticking zoom barrels when it was first introduced, now is virtually trouble free. We’ve eliminated the web-page warnings on all of those lenses. (I probably should point out again that we turn our lenses over pretty frequently, and in all three cases over half of our current copies were purchased in the last 6 months.)

got another question for you all....
im having problems with live view on my d700, should this work the same as on my d90 or are they compleatly different.
i cant do anything when in the live view setting(zoom, focus, take a picture)when you even half pre the shutter release to focus the shutter opens and closes like it would take a picture but doesnt and the live view goes on then back of with the shutter.
is this normal? if not how do i change it.
thansk
peter

When you focus using half shutter press the mirror has to be raised for it to focus before you take the shot.

Try pressing the info button whilst in live view - it cycles through several views including live view focus (which doesn't raise the shutter - I think) and artificial horizon :)

Don't have camera with me so can't check but I think I'm right from memory.

You are almost certainly in the Hand-Held LiveView mode - go to the Shooting Menu, LiveView, and change it to Tripod mode - should now work as expected

Hi all. Hoping for a bit of help/guidance/reassurance from experienced D700 owners. I have bought a D700 body from eBay. Also have a D300 so feels very familiar. Very honest seller (working pro) who has let me take it for a week to test and will take it back if I'm not completely satisfied. Camera is exactly as described - pretty well used, 60,000 frames gone. Sensor was recently cleaned by Fixation and it had part of the mirror mechanism replaced.

There is a spot or smudge on the mirror - will this affect the image at all? I took some ISO 6400 shots last night and there is a small dark spot on the images. I guess this is more likely to be dust on the lens or sensor as presumably the mirror is up and therefore nothing to do with it?

Second thing is that I have done some ISO tests at home and the high ISO presets - h0.3 & h0.7 - look to me to be cleaner than ISO 6400?! Is this because they have noise reduction automatically applied, whereas my 6400 shots have not? This is really flumoxing me.

Finally, what else can I do to be sure that everything's working and I'm not going to regret my purchase in 3 weeks time?

Cheers for you help!

A smudge on the mirror wouldn't have any effect on the image produced as the image is recorded directly onto the sensor, it would only have an effect if the image was bounced off the mirror first, before reaching the sensor. Which it isn't.

The spot on your image is 99.9% certain to be dust, a scoosh from a rocket blower should shift it. Failing that run the sensor cleaner a few times - if that doesn't work then a wet clean is in order....

well first the mirror has nothing to do with what you see on review of the pics just clean the mirror with a microfibre cloth, as for the dot in the pic, probably dust.
as for hih iso the d700 does no noise reduction under iso 2000, then over iso 2000 only what you select.
selecting off still performes it at iso of hi0.3 and higher but is weeker than low.
heres some high iso shots from mine to compare.

Yoohoo!

I've just joined the club too. I was a very short-term member of the D3 club, but that was too exclusive for my tastes (and we need a new boiler) so I've downgraded. some downgrade! I actually prefer the feel of the D700 and like the ability to go gripped or not.

Like many others I'm trying to figure out what I need lens wise now...
