Nikon D700 official owners/users thread, anything related to the D700

Hi everyone!!!!!!!
Just thought I'd say helloooo!!
I've joined the forum hopefully to get some help and advice, struggling with the D700 at the moment, bought it as a second body. Not sure about the results with the 24-70, photo's seem better on the D3S, maybe the combo needs fine tuning, anyone else needed to do this>?
Are there aftermarket grips or is the nikon one the only recommendation?

Hi Kaz

Nooo you cant say that about the Nikon 24-70 - just lashed out on one to go with a D700 (also just purchased :bang:)

Regards to the grip - I would go with the Nikon original (always have)...:thinking: a £1700+ body & you want to stick an aftermarket grip on it :shrug: :shake: thats insane....

Theres one or two in the classifieds - well there was a little while ago...
 
The 24-70 really is a dream lens for the D700, simply the best lens I've ever used. Having said that, I struggle to take the 50 1.4 off to accommodate it as again that's one hell of a lens.
 
Hi Karen and welcome to TP.

With regards to the 24-70 and your D700, sorry, but if your getting anything other than outstanding results right out of the camera then one, or both, need to be sent back for checking. These two work together just amazingly. I have to say, I've had one copy of this lens that had serious back focus issue. Nikon resolved that :thumbs:

As for after-market grips, there are a few brands; if you do a search for another TP member "cowasaki" you'll see he's coupled his D700 with one and I believe he's happy with the combination.

i bought mastering the D700 by darrell young nikonian press.
to fine tune my knowleedge and learn a few things allready and clarified a few others.

Yes the Meike grip which link delight sell on ebay is very good. It is curretnly £58.99 including postage with TWO batteries included in the price. They also supply it with the BL-3 adapter to take ELEN4 batteries, the AA adapter and the ELEN3 adapter.

Would you recommend this book then SC... As I got david Busch's digital guide to the D700 - only because I had the D300s version for when I had my D300s....

Is it much like the manual as it seems that some of these books are but with coloured pictures :suspect:

Karen - have you done a controlled test or is it just a general feeling? Your 24-70 should be every bit as as good on the D700 as it is on the D3S, unless you're using high ISO, in which case the D3S will start to overtake due to its 1.5 to 2-stop advantage.

Try a tripod-mounted comparison with the lens on each body in turn - keep absolutely everything the same: subject, distance, zoom setting, lighting (not flash), ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc.

Stay at ISO200* and the D700 & D3S results should be indistinguishable. If they aren't, something is amiss with the 700 combo.

*If you go over ISO800 (ish) the D3S will win.

Don't panic Steve :) - the 24-70 is a stonking good lens, regardless of the body (D700, D3, D3S, D3x).
 
Right, two questions.

This one is driving me nuts but it's probably something a child can do. On my D90, I can choose to have the images named in sequence from 001-9999, regardless of when I swap memory cards. However, the D700 seems to start from 001 every time I pop a new card in, which causes me all sorts of problems when on a job where I use 2 or 3 cards, as I have a whole host of multiple file names. Can anyone put me out of my misery here?

Also, the plastic bit on the LCD display seems to be welded on, for fear of breaking it I won't force it, but I assume it is actually supposed to detach easily enough?

yes the plasic bit comes off- work from the bottom

menu option d6 (edit to change to 6 my mistake) (in the custom menu) does the filenames

Cheers, but this is where the problem lies. I have that set to 'On' which should continue from the last filename, however it doesn't.

If I had a pound for every time I heard someone say that their D700/24-70 combo was less than great I'd have quite a few pounds. I've even said it myself.

I don't know if it's some kind of urban myth but for some reason the D700/24-70 stories do crop up from time to time. I just wish I could explain it :|

mmm interesting, are you doing strange things with your CF cards, I did have one miss a few numbers when I moved unformatted cards between cameras

You could try d6 to OFF, take a few shots on a reformatted card, then d6 to ON again.

If that doesn't work, changing the 'DSC' file name prefix to something else and repeating the OFF/ON routine might.

If all else fails a two-button reset might do the trick.

and I'm another. Love the D700 with the 70-200 and I even found I got good results with the 70-300 VR. But I am not impressed with the 24-70.
 
I'm intrigued now, I want to see some samples from the disappointing D700/24-70 combo's.
Never heard it before today, but suddenly got me thinking should I upgrade the cam body to "make the most" of my 24-70?

I shoot a few cars and I can quite often read the dealer name on the numberplate when the shot is of the whole car so I guess mine is ok.

Phew.... Thank god for that..

Well its attached a few snap shots (lets run up the shutter count) & bloody hell - I'm more than happy - nice sharp crisp "crappy shots" of anything & everything I could possible shoot type pics....

If this combo makes those look good then I cant wait to really get out & use it..... :thumbs:

Just hope that the VRII I have my eyes on is just as good .... Should hopefully know by the EOTM when I can finally buy/get it :lol:

I believe the 24-70 AF-S is one bit of a fantastic lens, nothing less; and on the D700 it shines. Simple.

However, the first copy I bought got me questioning my abilities. It was a bit soft; and for the life of me I couldn't get that "wow" picture taken with it. In the end, I did what I've always told myself not to do, a focusing test. Sure enough, I've found it to be a good few cms of back-focusing :eek:

No lens should do that, especially one costing this much and being one of the flagships of this brand; but Nikon are only mortal and it's inivitable that a lemon will slip through Q&A.

It took Nikon a few weeks to get it sorted, I think 6 weeks; and when it came back I sold it, stupid me :cuckoo:

I've since bought two, and made two friends buy one each. It's amazingly sharp and I can't emphasise that enough.

Bottom line, if your 24-70 AF-S combined with your D700 is not sharp enough to impress you right out of the camera, then have them looked into. That kind of money isn't spent on barely acceptable results.

I recently upgraded from a D90 to a D700 as I needed the low light ability for the newborn sessions I do with natural light indoors. I have the nifty fifty for that for now, but I bought the 24-120 VR (kit lens) as a stop-gap for outdoor work until I could afford the 24-70. Well, I did not like the 24-120 one bit, it seemed soft and far too easy to blow highlights, didn't focus easily and so, err, I may have raided the savings for a 24-70, partly due to many of the positive comments here in the first few days.. whoops!

I am delighted to say the 24-70 has blown me away - what a cracker of a lens! Really brings out the qualities of the D700 :D I did a session today feeling really under the weather and I assumed I didn't have that many great shots, which would have been the case with the D90 or with the 24-120 on the D700. Got home, loaded them into Lightroom and wow. Focus nailed most of the time, super sharp, amazing definition.. and about a hundred other superlatives too.

You sure as heck get what you pay for with glass, and bodies! Putting a crap lens on a great body is wasting the body!
 
Hello,

I'm considering a D700 as an upgrade for my D90 - mainly for low-light indoor moving target action shots (events). I'm persuading myself that the improvement in photon detection will outweigh the loss of reach... I'll just have to try to get closer.

So my question is, does anyone have experience using the 70-300VR on the D700 for indoor events? Is it better than a good stop-gap until I can budget for something better?

I have the 70-300 and it's not the fastest lens - AF can be pretty slow compared to a pro lens and aperture may not be fast enough for what you want. (Indoor karting?). The 70-200 VRII + D700 would be a different kettle of fish.
 
Thanks, I figured that would be the case... Karting, martial arts, ballet, etc.

Any third-party lenses worth a look?
 
I'd say karting & martial arts would be a bit of a no-no with the 70-300. Ballet might be ok though, depending on lighting.

I haven't tried any 3rd party lenses so can't really comment. Have a look around on Nikon Cafe. http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/forumdisplay.php?f=108

Btw, if you do go for the Nikon 70-300, bear in mind there have been several versions, so make sure you get the latest (VRII model).
 
Thanks. Its amateur use only... so might I get away with the 70-200mm VR 2.8 along with the D90 in the interim - sure to be a lot better than the 18-200mm VR(II) I'm using? I can budget for that now, and get the D700 when funds allow (along with a prime until I can budget for the 24-70mm). Of course, better/faster autofocus will be great.

Hmm - tricky to know what your best option is.

Because of the difference in sensor size (DX vs FX) the 70-200 VRII will give you more reach on a D90 than it does on a D700. Effectively, it'll be 105-300 mm versus 70-200mm (D90 vs D700), so it's your best choice lens-wise.

On the other hand, the D700 is superb in low light (which methinks is what you have at most indoor karting & martial arts events) - only the D3s is better than the D700 in low light.

The 70-200 VRII is vastly superior to the 18-200 on every front - but it's at least £1,600, or nearly the cost of a D700.

Catch 22 then.
