This is a basic question but I am having problems with the focus points. Something has been changed on my camera that stops the red focus points from flashing up prior to the shot being taken. camera is set on auto area AF and red focus points used to flash up and beep. I have been playing around with different settings and the only focus point coming up is when it is on dynamic area AF and there is a single one in the middle (which you can obviously move round if you want). I have been through the book and no joy please help!

I'm not sure about the D700, but on the D7000, there's a small button on the AF/M switch next to the lens mount... press that while turning the sub-command dial (I think it's that one!) and you can set the number of focal points in use.

the only way the red light come on in auto area is when you have the cam set to afs mode, and it wont show any in afc mode.
hope that helps.

I noticed that. But why? I'd have thought it would help in tracking moving targets. As it is, there is no indication of which focus point was used, until after the shot is taken (e.g. turning on display focus points in Aperture).

dont know why it is just the way its been done by nikon, if you want to track things use dynamic af and 9 or 21 or 51 or 51pt 3d depending on what you wannna track.

Front of the camera, pointing it away from you, left hand side beneath the lens release button is an option for choosing the focus mode, change it to S.

See if that helps.

I reckon that would solve it, the D700 doesn't shot the focus point on continuous focus.

However, if someone has managed to switch the beep off then please, for the love of God, leave it switched off!

thanks for the replies I wasn't expecting a response so quickly. taking all advice and will get back to you. What a great forum!

 I agree, crikey that 'look look, i am in focus and about to take picture' bleep doesn't half annoy me!

Glad I am not alone in feeling like this

its really annoying in the middle of a wedding :( Yet I've never got around to seeing if its in the manual to turn it off :(
