I'm about to buy a D700 & need to decide on a good all rounder lens to buy with it. I mainly take landscape (sme of which I sell) plus photos of the grandchildren (which I don't!) so feel that something like a 25-200 would be ideal. Buying the D700 is going to be a stretch so I can't afford too much on the lens but at the same time don't warn to regret the choice afterwards. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Why restrict youself to one lens? The two subjects that you mention don't seem to have too much cross over to me so I would personally rather have two cheaper specialised lenses than a compromised 'one size fits all solution'. I have no idea of the budget but if it's fairly tight, how about a 50mm 1.8 and an 18-35. If you buy used, you could have change from £250.

Need to know budget
What you presently use
What glass do you own

But I learn that money is better invested in glass first, upgrade the body later.

You will find some good D300s going for £750 second hand

With all the new body's expected this year you will get a bargin

Save for the 24-70 you will not regret it, its my walkaround lens

If you want a lens

Go for the

400mm f2.8

It will make your camera look the business

the Tamron 28-75 2.8 is a cracker of a lens for the price. I love mine and it's rarely off my camera.

Same as that, i think the Tamron and the Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 are the only 2.8 FF lens about IF your on a budget, it's rarely off my D700, the only problem with the Sigma's can be getting a good copy, however if you can stretch to a good chunk of money there's plenty more out there, and if your forte is landscapes, then the 14-24mm 2.8 is the way to go, but as i say big money, ie around £1300 new or £950 second hand

Some great advice there, thanks to everyone. As a follow up question a few mention buying second hand which I've never done so what's the best way bearing in mind I think I could be quite easily conned!

The classifieds here are a great place to buy second hand gear. The majority of my current kit is second hand (camera, grip, both lenses, bag) and purchased through this forum, and I've never had an issue.

Other than here there are various retailers who do s/h kit, such as MPB Photographic, Mifsuds, and Ffordes. With them you will get some sort of return policy, which is handy because, as someone pointed out, third party lenses can sometimes vary in quality dramatically. It took me three Tamron 28-75's before I found one that I was happy with.

Personally I'd steer clear of eBay and Gumtree for lenses and the like.

My three main lens used with my D700 is the Sigma 12-24, Sigma 24-70 and my Nikon 70-200.

A good all round lens doesn't have mean a lens with a huge focal range.

The Nikon 50mm f1.4 or the cheaper 1.8 are great do anything lenses.

But I would seriously advise you have at least a few half decent fx lenses before you drop all that money on a D700. You just won't be getting the best out of that camera.

Nobody ever mentions the Tamron 24-135. It is a n excellent lens for the money.

Still no sign of your budget.

I prefer the Tamron 17-35 f2.6-4 rather than the Nikon 18-35.

The Sigma 14mm f2.8 is also good, if you can find one, for landscapes.

All of the lens mentioned are excellent but most are pricey.

I've been reminded that I haven't given a budget which is fair comment! I was hoping for a good lens for my walks around the Lake District (so I guess something like a 24-70) & was hoping to work to a budget of around £500 although getting the right lens is more important than working to a rigid budget. As regards buying from the TP classified I'm having a problem as its saying "access denied", any ideas why?

There are requirements you have to meet to gain access, I don't remember exact numbers but it's a certain number of posts and a minimum membership time.

You mentioned the 24-70mm as a walk around lens, it is a fantastic lens and I love mine, however I brought mine fairly cheap second hand and I've not seen another one priced the same or less than what I paid, which is a fair chunk more than your £500 budget. Perhaps one of the similar offerings from sigma or tamron may fall within your budget second hand.

Be mindful that a D700 and a fast zoom is a heavy lump to cart round the lakes on a walk! I've got a Nikkor 28-70 which is an outstanding lens but after carrying it and my D700 around for a day, I bought an old 28-105mm which while inferior optically to the 28-70 (although most things are) it is much nicer to haul around.

If the 24-70 is a bit much, the tamron 28-75 is a really good lens as well. The 24-120 is a great focal range, second hand they are like gold dust in the F4 version...However the original 'street sweeper' non VR is very good as well and should be able to be found for around £150... I would stay away from the non f4 VR model though...

But ultimately that D700 deserves the 24-70 :)
