Hi

I am thinking of getting a Nikon D70 with a Tamron 28-300 zoom lens.

Is this a good camera, I did have a D40.

Can the D70 be used with the older lenses, so more choice than the D40?

Thanks

Yep, the d70 has cam focussing so you won't have to stick to AF-S lenses.

Haven't used a d40 but it looks like a tiny piddly little thing, the d70 is much more of a hand full.
It probably performs better in low light with newer sensor tech but it is kinda limited from a lens perspective.
I'd take the d70 everyday of the week...:)

Having had a Tamron 28-300, I would point you at a 2 lens solution rather than the single one unless you really don't want to change lenses and will only be printing up to A5. At the short end, barrel distortion is particularly obvious and at the long end, expect lovely fringes round all the high contrast edges. If you can, give the lens a try before you buy it and see what you think of the final results - after all, it's your opinion of them that really counts. IMO, a better (relatively budget) option would be an 18-70mm and a 70-300 (either the older G type Nikkor or the Sigma APO).

As for the D70, great camera. "Only" 6MP but images up to A3 print size from it (with decent lenses) look great. Will AF with almost all Nikon AF fit lenses (check the manual - available on-line at the Nikon site). Like the D40, the D70 is a 6MP, 1.5x crop sensor.

D70 was my first DSLR and I would not part with it.
Be sure to get the free firmware upgrade if it does not already have it.

I upgraded to the D90 after having the D70... and I'm beginning to miss it to be honest! :'(

The images are so incredibly sharp on the D70 (I believe the reason is because of its weak AA filter?).

Great camera, can't go wrong with it. :)

I still have my D70 (and a D70s) wouldn't part with either, much nicer to use than the newer D40

Funny you mention this Vicky............check the for sale section;)
