Nikon D610

Do you think the Nikon D610/D600 is an acceptable upgrade to the Nikon D700?

This camera doesn't get half the attention that it deserves so I decided to review it, or rather say why I think it's a good upgrade from the Nikon D700:

Nikon D610 Review

Apologies if this counts as self-promotion in any way - I'm new here so am not too sure of the guidelines yet. Go easy on me ;-)

Cheers

Hi Mark

Interesting review, but as someone genuinely thinking of moving back from Canon I'm toiling with a mid-range zoom to equal the Canon 24-105. Neither the 24-85 nor the 24-120 gets a great write-up, so I'd be interested to know what you recommend as a stndard zoom for the D610.

The 24-120mm F4 has very good reviews :)

But it's about £800!

In my view Nikon is without a decent mid priced zoom. And I've tried a few with my d700. Current best is the old 35-70 f/2.8.
I don't like the 24-85. Just not sharp. A few in here like the tamron. You just have to find a decent copy.

The Photozone review is a bit less than ecstatic, and I like them because they test a whole range of lenses on the same/similar cameras. http://www.photozone.de/nikon_ff/574-nikkorafs24120f4vrff?start=2

Verdict
The Nikkor AF-S 24-120 mm f/4G ED VR offers an attractive zoom range with excellent sharpness in the image center at the lower end of its focal range. However, the image borders and corners show a little less resolution wide open than we had expected from a lens in this segment. The same applies to the sharpness in general (including the image center) at the lens' tele setting.
Distortion is rather pronounced except around 35 mm, vignetting is somewhat on the high side, too, which is also true for CAs. So, optically, the lens isn't all that stellar.

There's a tamron zoom within a similar range which is supposedly very good?

Sorry but I can't help you with zooms Peter! I've only ever used the 24-70 (which is amazing) and primes.

Yep the old 35-70mm was a very good lens,i did use the 24-85 its was to bad :)

24-70 is mid price for what you get. Sharp, fast and great contrast/colours.

It's great on the camera

It's also £1235 according to Camera Pricebuster Steve, and that's just way beyond my means. Canon has the equivalent 24-70 f2.8 @ £1639 and the f4 version @ £899, while the 24-105 is @ £659 (all from CPB). It's an equivalent to the £659 lens that I'm trying to find.

A used 24-120 f4 is a great buy, the only real flaws are vignetting/distortion, both of which disappear with a click in lightroom. It's perfectly sharp throughout the range, I've owned a few copies of the 24-70 and it compares very favourably.

Hi Mark,i dipped my fingers into the D610 pool following your review. I myself have migrated from D7K and D610 makes so much sense for me as all the controls are identical, the camera body size is almost identical and D610 being slightly heavier.

one notable improvement is the auto focus. It is extremely snappy even under low light condition quite a contradiction to what i have been reading on the net. I tested it as soon as I got it with an unlite room and curtains drawn so very little ambient light and it was able to pick up focus and accurately focus on all kind of surfaces albeit i was using the centre focus point.

Thanks for checking it out guys! Very interesting to hear your thoughts on the camera.

The centre focus point is fine. The rest.....Not so great in low light
I do see the issue of limited spread of the AF points. It was rather annoying as I had the ahit set up on my tripod and had to readjust yo get focus.

I've got over the average AF of the d610 (in terms of spread over the frame) when landscaping by just manually focussing everything in live view.
