Hi All,

Having got out today for the 1st time with my Nikon D610, I downloaded the files from the SD card to a new Aperture project on my imac but although I can see the thumbnails, I'm getting an 'unsupported image format' message. I've checked software update and there isn't an update for aperture available. For info. i have Aperture version 2.1.4 and my iMac is running OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard?).

Is this one of those Apple tricks to get me to upgrade to OSX 10.7 Lion or later? Had a similar issue when i got my iPhone 5 a year or so ago and had to upgrade to Snow Leopard but have held back from upgrading to the latest OSX so far.

Any advise appreciated. Thanks.

If your version of Aperture is older than the camera, it won't support the RAWs from it. Can you upgrade Aperture?

Thanks for comment, but not sure that's entirely right as Apple usually release updates as and when new cameras are released. Aperture 2 is several years old and I've used my D300s (which was released after Aperture 2) without this issue. Doing a bit more online research, it's definitely an OSX issue rather than Aperture. Could upgrade, yes, but don't want to spend £55 and then realise that the latest version of Aperture isn't compatible with Snow Leopard.

Well that sucks!

I'm so glad I don't use a Mac... well. I do at work.. but I'm glad I don't own one.

I think the latest version of Aperture only works in Mavericks
I have the version before on osx 10.8.5 - I am happy to try one of your NEF files if you like

Cheers

Mike

My (very) old Lightroom wouldn't read NEFs from my D610. I couldn't find a free NEF update for the old version, so I just upgraded Lightroom completely and it fixed it right up. (Macbook Pro running Mavericks)

Alternative is to use Nikon's free ViewNX software to import and convert the files to TIFFs. You can play with the WB, exposure and a few other things in the Nikon software before you export, so you are getting much of the benefits of the raw capture.

Me. I like the seamless process whereby I can just work with the NEFs in Lightroom. It was worth the $90 for the upgrade.

As an aside, nobody seems to rate the Nikon Capture NX2 software. Anybody have an opinion?

I have used capture nx2 for about 3 years now originally with a d700 and now with a d610 - i definately prefer it to lr3 which i have also tried - the nice thing with nx2 is it keeps all the in camera settings as a starting point when you open a nef so shooting raw is as simple as shooting jpeg if you don't like having to do too much tweaking of your images.
