I decided to upgrade to a D610, and it was only after i purchased the camera that i found out that CS5.1 / ACR 6.7 does not open
D610 NEFs

So, download DNG 6.7 converter compatible for CS5.1 / ACR 6.7

Installed ok but when opening up DNG to convert some NEFs, the ' convert ' and the 'extract ' buttons were missing. Very helpful !

Tried many others ( DNG 7.3 , 8.6, 8.7 etc ) and though they all installed ok with the ' convert ' and ' extract ' buttons present, as soon as i tried to open a NEF to convert, i get a weird
message saying it cant be done.

I seem to be cornered by Adobe. Perhaps they want me to upgrade ? Not a chance. I dont have the money

So is the answer , other than sell the D610 ( or dump Nikon altogether ) to go back to an earlier Nikon or back to Canon / Pentax ( i've owned a couple of models of each )

I don't think dumping Nikon is going to solve your problem. If you're looking to buy newer camera's your'e going to have to face the fact that they will stop supporting newer NEF files in there older software regardless of which manufacturer the camera is made by.

The problem you're having is to do with the DNG converter, not the camera. I have a D610 and I am managing perfectly fine. It sounds to me like you haven't selected all the required options needed to convert the files. Have you selected a destination folder for example?

It might be worth re-installing the DNG converter or installing it on another PC to try and pin-point the issue.

Yup, i did try naming a destination folder ... maybe i should do some screenshots ?

Not sure why the ' convert ' and ' extract ' buttons should be missing on one version of DNG and they appear on a different version

Is it the case that only certain versions of DNG will work ? I use CS5.1 with ACR 6.7

I was able to download the latest DNG converter and it worked grand. Try the link Connersz has given. Let us know how you get on :-)

Will give it a try - thanks folks

Brilliant - thanks connersz. Conversion worked fine

I think the reason i missed v9.1 was googling info about DNG versions compatible with ACR 6.7 and reading that the later versions of DNG were not compatible with ACR 6.7, only 7.1 and later

So considering versions 7 and 8 didnt work, i didnt bother with a later version

And in fact, it says so in the GUI when opening DNG V9.1

Glad to hear it's now working. In theory there are a few benefits to using DNG instead of RAW. I think the only downside is waiting for the conversion to finish.

I think the differences maybe too subtle for me, but as long as i can work in RAW, i'm ok with either. I've certainly used DNG before, when i was a Pentax shooter back in 2000

I'm a bit surprised that the screen shot of V9.1 DNG ( along with previous versions i tried ) have that text saying that this DNG is compatible with ACR 7.1 and later, when clearly it works fine with ACR 6.7

I suppose these are just hurdles to get round or over, like most things in life.

But hey Jamie, thanks !
