Nikon D600 / D610 Official Users thread - Anything D6x0 related

Thanks John and Neil. I will follow your suggestions.

Hopefully you'll have no problem getting a D610. Don't rely on them telling you though. They asked me to send back my D600, for checking, but I only knew I had a new D610 when it arrived!

I just had a chat with Nikon support and the fellow told me that I may be eligible for a replacement camera which sounds good at this moment, but he asked me to contact the support center directly as they deal with this.

A couple of questions for who got the replacement D610-

1. Did they send you a new D610 as it comes when you buy the camera from a store or did they just sent you a D610 wrapped up in a repair box? What do I need to send in?
2. If they are replacing the camera with D610, Do they offer any upgrade with a price difference to be paid by the customer?

You get a brand new D610 as if you bought it in a shop, and it is eligible for the 2 years warranty. Just send the body back as for a normal repair is all I did.

2. If they are replacing the camera with D610, Do they offer any upgrade with a price difference to be paid by the customer?
No.

I wrote a polite yet firm covering letter explaining that I was unhappy at having to send my D600 in for the third time, I specifically asked if I could upgrade and pay the difference, I got a call from David Walsh (I think ...) and he told me no go on the upgrade but happy to replace the camera. So far the D610 has been fine. In the end Nikon have dealt with this in a very satisfactory way, I just wished they had been more pro-active when the scale of the problem became obvious.

In answer to your questions, in my case;

1. They sent me a brand new boxed D610. Worth pointing out I managed to get a free battery, eyepiece cover, strap, flash cover and protector screen since they had requested I remove these from the D600 prior to couriering as the camera was initially sent in for its second repair, not replacement.
2. No idea - didn't request an upgrade.

Quick update: I sent my D600 to Nikon today.

Had a chat with Nikon before doing that and the guy said that I might be eligible for a replacement.

I spoke to Nikon Support over phone and the moment I mentioned my case and RMA, the lady immediately said "I know about your case. It is escalated and will act on it promptly?" I can't remember to have escalated anything just had a chat.

Anyways, when I asked can I get it back by 19th as I will be away on vacation from 20th and need a Camera. She said I will definitely get it back, but can't promise if it is a replacement or my good old D600.

Will have to wait and see.

Have you guys noticed any difference in IQ on the D610? I love everything about my D600 except the dust issues.

I'd say you have a very good chance of a replacement D610, but as you say you'll have to wait and see!
Good luck!

I'm also heading off on the 19th for Xmas, down to Austria skiing for the week. Good opportunity for some stunning mountain scenery!

The D610 has the new Qc mode. Is 0.5fps faster

The IQ is same.

The D610 has the new Qc (quiet continuous) mode.

In continuous mode it is 0.5fps faster.

The final change is that the D610 seems to support faster SD cards as it has SDR104 protocol compared to SDR50 of the D600, so it clears the buffer faster.

Quick update: Spoke to Nikon Support today and I was told that the letter I wrote to John Walshe is received and he has looked into my case and Nikon has decided to offer me a D610 replacement. It is shipped today and I should receive tomorrow.
I didn't even ask for a D750 + paying any difference as I know very well that the D610 is more than capable of what I shoot (mostly Landscape, portrait, street and off camera flash) and it will take quite some time for me to outgrow what the D610 offers.

Thanks to John specifically for the tip on writing to John Walshe and everyone else who suggested me what to do. I sent the D600 body only so I hope they send normal D610 package and not a refurbished body in a plastic wrapper.

I love the IQ from the D600 and since D610 is the same camera sans the dust sprayer inside, I hope I can just keep on shooting without worrying about dust.

Hoping good times ahead and great to see that finally Nikon is taking steps to satisfy and manage expectation of customers.

They sent me a brand new boxed and complete D610 so would expect them to send you the same.

I sent in my D600 to get the shutter replaced there were spots of oil on the sensor (a few months after having it cleaned) and this is the results as on the invoice:

No fault found. Send in lens if problems continue

Thorough cleaning of mirror box, mirror mechanism and sensor area. Performing precautionary measures to reduce entry/dispersion of dust particles. Please note that DSLR cameras cannot be sealed completely, dust particles could potentially enter the system during operation (e.g. lens change, focusing/zooming etc.). Please see pages 301-305 within your user manual for further information and general cleaning instructions.

Firmware upgrade to the latest version

So I take it that the shutter wasn't replaced for the new one as should of been? I also have to pay for it to be returned. Not sure what to do really.

Sounds like you need to send a letter... ;)

I was hoping a phone call would work. I just don't get it, there was clearly parts of the shutter on the sensor (not as bad as before it was cleaned) because I've hardly removed the lens since. They operate a warranty repair for this very issue but haven't bothered with it.

did u take a picture of the sensor i.e. was it covered with the oily splatter or just a few spots. what they are saying is correct. My D610 has spots on sensor but i wouldn't considered to be excessive as the D600 would appear to have. they may not agree with the fact that there are dust/spots ont he sensor thus give u a new D610 automatically.

I send them a photo of the spots, but pretty sure I have one. I'm not expecting a D610, just an all new shutter mechanism as per the warranty issue.

The way this seems to work is that you need to send the camera in a few times. When I first sent mine in, it was obvious that something was amiss, the sensor was literally a mass of oil spots. When it was returned there were still some spots showing, but they had replaced the shutter base plate and a few bits n bobs. I figured it was just normal dust so cleaned the sensor, after a few shots it became clear it wasn't just dust so I sent it back to Nikon. They returned it with much the same response as Matt (@doublem1) had. A few quick test shots confirmed to me that they hadn't fully cleaned it and that the spots looked more like oil than dust. I phoned them up and sent the camera back again, but this time with a covering letter, polite but fairly strongly worded. A week later I received a replacement D610, which now btw needs the sensor cleaning - but this time just normal run of the mill cleaning that all DSLRs need from time to time. Hopefully that will be the end of my issues.

Sounds like Matt you need to get on the PC and type a letter out and give clear evidence.

my D610 has had around 3-4K shots since August...I can assure you that there are dust spots and others on it :)

My replacement D610 arrived today.

A brand new camera like how several others here received as replacement. It came with all standard accessories including charger and new battery etc.
I hope this settles the 'dust' issue for me. Normal dust on DSLR is fine which I can deal with. Now, back to shooting.

Well, I can't seem to find the photos I took of the dust, probably my fault for clearing my trash recently although I think I may have them on a back up. I think for the moment I will take it on the chin and accept what they have said, I am always careful when changing lens on the very few occasions but I will be extra careful and reassess the state of the sensor when I receive it and in a few 1000 shots time. If it crops up again I will demand a new shutter mechanism at the very least.

Re-reading the repair invoice it mentions a Shutter Place Unit being fitted:

Labour Charges

SR Repair Scheme

Parts Fitted

SHUTTER PLATE UNIT

What does that mean exactly? I'm thinking they did actually fit a replacement shutter.

Just checked and had the same description on my first repair invoice and it means a new shutter is fitted.

Thanks for confirming, much appreciated! :)

The shutter plate replacement did not help for me (earlier this year). It was just a temporary solution and problem reappeared. Unless they managed to solve it somehow since then the only permanent solution is to replace the camera.

I think they do the following:

1st time in - cleaning of sensor and mirror assembly
2nd time in - shutter plate replacement + sensor cleaning
3rd time in - another cleaning or D610 (if the customer insists)

They also seems to be having a policy for all cleaning jobs that no spots can be visible at back display at f/16.

Dunno, but they replaced mine on the second return.

Did you get a D610? If so did you have to demand one?

Yep, I had my D600 replaced even though I sent it in the second time for repair.
Not sure if I demanded one, but I questioned the sense in continuously returning a camera for repair which wasn't a benefit to anyone, costs them money and I'm without my camera.

I had my D600 replaced with a D610 in second repair. First had a chat online and expressed my dissatisfaction. I was told I might be eligible for a replacement. Few members here including John and Neil suggested me to write a letter which I did and in 3 days they took a decision to send me a brand new boxed D610. I spoke to the care centre on Tue and the had a brief discussion while I was holding and then the D610 was shipped same day. I gave the same argument that Neil mentioned.

You should persist for a replacement as it would be your third I guess.

I sent two letters actually. A covering letter to service centre and a letter to John Walshe, GM of Nikon. Sent signed copies with the camera and sent the letter to John Walshe as an email on the same day.

Here's last two pics taken with my D600

Thanks, John and Neil. Followed your advice. Camera was sent in at the end of November, for the first time. Returned a couple of weeks later. I returned it for a second time as it came back with dust on the sensor. Returned to me on Christmas Eve. Within a day, there was dust on the sensor again. Returned it the third time and Nikon received it on Monday (Jan 5). Advised me yesterday that it was being returned to me today. Arrived lunchtime in the same box that I'd sent it in, so thought *!**!! that it had just been cleaned again. Opened it up and there was a new D610, all boxed and with all accessories. Well chuffed. Didn't have to write a letter or contact anyone else other than CS. Restored my faith in Nikon.

Well done Roy.
Now post some shots with that D610!
Enjoy!

Happy Days Roy  Good start to 2015 for you.

Out of curiosity do you need to shot at a blank wall a f2.8 to see dust as I have never seen any in normal use or am I just really lucky

You're more likely to see dust at narrow apertures. My d600 needs a thorough clean. Spent all Christmas shooting family at wide apertures and didn't notice a thing. First landscape shot after that at f/11 and I noticed that the sky is full of dust bunnies. Off to nikon imminently.

Ideally you need to take a picture clear blue sky at f22. Then zoom in on the back of the camera or load your picture onto a computer and zoom in. This is how I noticed dust on my d600.

Interesting.... Now you say that I remember a wedding in the summer where I photographed the bride and groom with landscape behind and blue sky. I then cloned out lots of what I though were out of focus flies from the sky which might have been dust
