Nikon D600 / D610 Official Users thread - Anything D6x0 related

Make sure if you get the 18-35 that it's the newer AF-S version as it's much sharper and better than the AF-D version.

24mm over 28mm will only gain you a little bit extra in the wideness stakes, so I would look to a UWA zoom of some description.
 
Difference in field of view at 24mm to 28mm is very telling. I'd honestly find a used 24-70F2.8. Great do all lens thats fast wide open and good for portraits and usable in the bulk of landscape shooting I do.

I couldn't recommend a 16-35 or 18-35 as I've not used them.
 
Got a D610 purchased off the forum under my desk here. Looking forward to having a play.

Currently got a D90 and have also a Fuji X-E1 that was perhaps going to replace the D90 but the speed of the AF on the Fuji is a bit too slow for my needs (generally pics of the kids) so probably will be sold. The Fuji is a lovely camera though and will be sad to see it go but have to justify the new acquisition! I had thought to about other CSCs with better AF but didn't want to go through more cameras and not be satisfied. Perhaps I'll take another look in 1-2 years.

Also purchased a couple of lenses off here, 24-70 2.8 which is raved about on this thread and also a 50 1.4G. Having read through the thread hopefully there's no issue with the focus, especially the 50.

D90 has been great and learnt a lot with it and still have loads to learn of course (very much an amateur here!) but the ISO capability is a bit limiting compared to what is out there now. I often take pics of the kids indoors.

One downside compared to the Fuji maybe the DOF meaning a higher F-stop needed with the D610 and no IS/VC etc might force a higher speed indoors but we'll see!
 
I've found another irk, sorry to say.

Most of my sunglasses tend to be polarised and the eyepiece of the D610 must be plastic as you get the rainbow wave effect when you look through it with the glasses on. Never had this problem with my D700, the eyepiece of which is glass.
 
Hi

Just wondering whether anyone has tried a Tokina 11-17mm lens on their D6x0? I think I read on the 'net somewhere that even though it's a DX lens it would be ok at the long end.

Reason I ask is that I have this lens with my D90 and only for occassional use but wondered if I could sell the D90 now.

As an alternative with the D610 operate in DX mode with this lens which should mean it works just the same as the D90 anyway? Or is DX mode only compatible with Nikon DX lens?

Do you mean the 11-16 f/2.8 lens? Word has it that it's pretty good on FF at 16mm without being in DX mode. I'd used it on a D3 once and it was pretty reasonable.
 
Yes, sorry that's the one. It's a nice lens on the D90 so good to know it'll work fine on DX mode and then see what happens in FX mode.
 
Ok guys, my D600 seems to have some dust on the sensor at the top left corner - trademark D600 dust pattern. I will first try a blower to see if it is loose dust, but if not, I will send it to Nikon.

The questions I have are

1. What is your experience of sending to Nikon and getting it back in terms of time (UK)
2. Did you send in original box ? Did they return in original box without damage to box
3. For most recent sensor dust issues - did they replace the shutter or clean the sensor?

Appreciate comments from people who have sent their camera to Nikon on the dust issue.

Good. Took around 8 or 9 days only - Nikon paid all postage.

2. Did you send in original box ? Did they return in original box without damage to box

Yes and Yes - everything I sent was returned.

3. For most recent sensor dust issues - did they replace the shutter or clean the sensor?

Replaced Shutter Plate Unit and lots of double sided sticky tape ...

1. Sent it back, received it back with new shutter and loads of double sided tape, but they didn't actually clean the sensor. Had to send it back again for a clean. Was without the camera for about 3 weeks.
2. Sent in box, returned safely.
3. Replaced shutter.

Have now sent it back again. Posted on the 17th, parcelforce tracking states that it has been received at the wrong depot... twice! Currently updated 21st as forwarded for processing. So much for 24 hours delivery!

I'm going away, on the 2nd August, looking less and less likely I'll have the camera :(

In the future I may sell the D90 and Tokina and pick up an FX wide angle, once funds allow.

Would you expect a D610 in DX mode to outperform a D90 - I guess it should be similar! Anyway, will no doubt experiment with the two.
 
Bear in mind 11mm on DX is almost 18mm on FX, if the above lens is out of your price bracket, then there are plenty alternative for UWA such as the samyang 14mm, tokina/tamron/cosina 17mm manual, if you want the zoom range then sigma 15-30mm (might got the range wrong) but you can't for filters in front of it, or the 18-35mm Nikon af-s, the older AF G isn't so good, but the new one is stellar other than the distortion is quite a bit on the 18mm end. Also second hand 17-35mm f2.8 can be got at a decent price. There are AF motor suqeaky ones on eBay for fairly cheaply.

Although 16-35 and 17-35 are massive beasts! Heavy and HUGE!

Ffordes have got a tamron 17-35 for £189, bargain for a decent Fx ultra wide and they aren't that easy to find.

I suspect a D610 on crop mode to have a lower resolution than a D90. I dynamic range should be better but I don't see the point of buying a FF body to use it as an APSC.

I'd sell the DX lens's you have, and just get a decent zoom lens on FF. 24mm is wide enough for most scenarios on FF, but there are wider options. The post above mine mentioned a 17-35mm. I'd take a punt on it.
 
Hi

A query on SD cards. I currently have a 16GB Sandisk Extreme card (same as this one):

So I thought I would get a 32GB card to go with it, so went for this one:

From what I can see both cards appear to be the same except for the card sticker. The black sticker version being a few £s more in both the 16GB and 32GB version.

Anyway, I got the 32GB one through and had a problem with some files getting corrupted and on top of that it is clearly slower in the camera with the yellow 'busy' light staying on for much longer than the 16GB card I already had after a picture is taken.

The upshot is that I'm going to send the 32GB card back anyway as I don't trust it now anyway but I don't see why there should be a performance difference given the advert. However I do suspect the yellow label card is an older model claiming the same speed. Any thoughts?

The 16GB card performs fine but tempted by the Extreme Pro just to make it faster still. Flicking through the images on the camera did seem a bit slow (although I've got the camera on RAW + JPEG at the moment so not too surprising perhaps!) Do you think the Extreme Pro is worthwhile?

This is a quiet thread! Everyone bought a D810 already? Thought someone might like to know Panamoz have reduced their prices on d610 gear. Body is now £950 (£902.5 BT) and body and kit lens is £1252 (£1189.40 BT). That's around £50 and £100 less respectively since yesterday.

Maybe they know something about the impending new release (whatever it is).....
 
got mine about 6 weeks ago so its probably about 50quid more than the current panamoz price. but to be honest gear price will drop regardless...ultimately I am extremely happy. Not tried D810 or D800E but to me the size of D610 and weight is advantageous and also the dual card slot having the same medium format makes sense to me. not sure i would benefit much from the large pixels in the D810/D800E

I am extremely impressed with the dynamic range of the sensor...the shot below is from a single frame and it almost has the effect of HDR...incredible.

First post on this thread. Been using my D600 for a few weeks now and have to say I just love it. I had a few worries before buying it. I'm coming from a D3 so immediate concerns were things like focus speed, spread of AF points, flimsier build, reduced number of external controls and being left eye dominant and using BFF, the lack of a dedicated AF-On button. Now that I've been using it a bit, every single one of those concerns has disappeared. My big driver for moving from the D3 was to reduce the bulk a little. The D3 sometimes got left at home, partly because of weight and partly because at any kind of social gathering, a camera like that always looks a little too serious no matter what lens is stuck on. I hadn't really noticed that D600 prices had more or less aligned with D3 prices so once I did, I made the jump. The D600 feels like a compact in comparison (mostly in a good way) and with a 50mm lens on, I'm happy to take it anywhere.

The IQ of the thing has been the biggest eye opener so far. Not so much the resolution as the novelty of that wears off fast if you aren't printing much but the dynamic range just staggers me. I was out with it at sunset a couple of nights ago and one shot was pointed right at the setting sun. I bracketed it as that is how I'm used to having to work but when I got home I found that a single exposure had more or less got everything I need. The D3 would have really struggled there. The high iso performance has also caught me by surprise. I'd expected it to be similar to the D3 but I think it is actually a fair chunk better, mainly in terms of colour rendition. Impressive.

No need to rattle on, you guys know all this stuff already, just wanted to get it off my chest!

A couple of shots so far:

This one is shot on a 28mm 2.8 AIS. Rapidly becoming my favourite lens. Its just a lovely thing to use.

I've included as I noticed this lens getting a little criticism further up the page but I have to say, other than a bit of distortion I find it a very good performer and cheap too (relatively speaking). I did merge this exposure. Even the D600 can't do miracles :)

I use my D610 a lot. Its a fine camera that when used properly will yield lovely results. Ok low res but they are tack sharp at full res. Critisms are it misses focus sometimes in low light and it doesn't feel as intuative to use as a D800 where the ISO control is on the top of the body, but its perfectly good

Just had an email from nikon about the update but I can't see anything very exciting about the update, especially as I only have older manual focus nikkor lenses which don't appear to support this "feature" - I wonder what people did about distortion in the days of film.

Actually do I need to update this firmware before updating next? Are the firmwares sequential updates?

Never ever updated firmwares on any of my cameras before...reason being "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Which firmware was that? The thing i hate the most about my D600's is the performance during first dances. Sometimes it misses and takes ages to reacquire focus. It's like "Ooops I missed. Gimme a sec, whilst I do nothing....ok...i'll try grabbing focus again....no rush"
 
Yeah before the firmware update I had a lot of problems in church and stuff but the firmware update did help a lot. If you have not updated I would recommend you do. It was the one before this one but I would think if you do this one it will have all the firmware's combined
 
Thanks John. I just checked and one had been updated, the other had not. Have just upgraded both to the latest now so will see if this does improve AF in low light. Maybe it was the one that was not upgraded that I had problems with.

Did you get your camera back in time?

I only ask as I sent my D600 off on 13 Aug for the shutter replacement thing while it was still in warranty, even though I didn't see any issues I just checked today and it still says 'awaiting repair'. That'll be three weeks on Wednesday that they have had it.
I've seen elsewhere that they have replaced a D600 body taken in for repair with a new D610.

Has this happened to any erstwhile posters on TP?

Certainly seems to help, admittedly I was using centre focus point but it was very quick and no hunting the other night when I used it at a gig.

Super impressed with the high ISO work on the D610 - ISO6,400 looks great and even HI2 25,600 is useable to a point!

The saga continues....
I received the camera, once again shutter replaced, etc. I then emailled a complaint, as I was not happy, as I had asked about a replacement and had been promised, on 2 occasions that someone would contact me. Surprise, surprise, no contact at all, hence my complaint. Was then contacted, by email, by the head of customer services, asking that I return the camera for his attention. Did this and after a few days, but absolutely no contact, got a dispatch email. All I know is that the camera has been exchanged. Don't know, at this point, what for as DPD fecked up the delivery today :(
Still disappointed with Nikon customer services, given that I had complained about a lack of contact, you would think they would have at least sent me an email stating the course of action they've taken.

Knowing my luck, they'll have replaced my D600, with a Coolpix :rolleyes:

Hopefully, DPD will deliver tomorrow, so I can see what Nikon camera I have.
