Im new to this site and would like some friendly advice.......
I would like to buy myself a dslr in the new year and have been doing some research. The D60 seems to be the one for me with an 18-55 vr lens. Would anyone suggest anything different and if so what???
Would really like to hear from people who know a little more than i do

Thanks guys....

Well I really like this like camera for what is it - a tiny and compact camera with excellent image quality, ideal for discrete shooting.

However be aware of the lens limitations with the D60, and other entry level Nikons, specifically with regards to auto focus limitations.

Personally I love this camera, but you need to consider the Sony A200 and the Canon 450D as well, because in many ways they might be better choices.

thankyou, i had been looking at the sony range and apparently they are super quick?

Personally I wouldn't go for a D60 because it limits your choice of lenses to AF-s if you want autofocus, as 90% of the lenses sold on here n the classifieds aren't AF-s you'll miss out on some bargains

If I was on a budget and I was mainly shooting landscape and portrait i'd go for the Fuji S5 Pro which has to be the bargain of the year at £355 delivered for a refurbished one which is probably a new one in a refurb box. it takes Nikon lenses and is based on the D200

It's not an action shooters camera though

Code FSDEC gets 15% off to bring it down the £350

Thankyou. I had seen this in what digital camera magazine i think and did have a look, I was so set on a d60 or 90 but really not sure now. At least i got some more vision

Having just upgraded from the D40 to the D200 i'd say go for something without the lens restrictions. Either Canon 450d + or a Nikon D90 (or even an 80) or as suggested a Fuji S5 Pro or second hand D200 (around £400 notes) if you need a bit more speed.....

I had a D60, it is a great camera and punches above it weight in terms of IQ imho, but as said before I decided to change mainly because of the AF-S lens issue, the fact it only has 3 AF points and it is physically quite small (I bought online without really trying one out properly first and have big hands)...

If the D90 is stretching your budget then have a look at the D80+18-55mm VR kit that Jessops sell for £440, I got one on Sunday and love it:D

I'd avoid the D60 based purely of the AF-S issue. If you want something for D60ish money, get a D80. The D80 is still better than the D60 but because it's been superceeded (by the D90), I expect there's some great deals out there.

I don't think I'd advise a D200 or S5 Pro as a first dslr. The beauty of the likes of the D40/D60 is that they have the scene modes and the helper sections on the rear display, whereas the other two being more advanced amatuer cameras do not.

The D80 kit metioned above seems like a better compromise - it has a lot of the features of the D200/S5, but it also has the scene modes which might come in useful at first.

Unlike the D40/D60 though it will allow you to expand your lens collection (should you wish to do so) as you find your own shooting style, whereas the lack of an autofocus motor in the D40/60 would somewhat restrict your choice of lenses, unless you were to manually focus all the time.

As said, the D80 has scene modes as well as Auto mode. Not sure about the D200, but I expect it's the same as the D300; it doesn't have an Auto mode. All you get is M, P, S and A. Although P, S, and A have gathered dust as my fingers are busy enough operating F, S and ISO.

I hope I haven't confused anyone. TTFN.

Just picked up a D60 for a friend duty free with VR lens at Gatwick and including the current cashback offer it comes to £269. That's a lot of bang for your buck despite the AF-S limitations.

I have the D80 & haven't regretted a thing about it. I learn something new with it everyday. I would have the D60 as a back up but as I advance now I am looking for something better than what I have.

I have a D40 and never found the AF-S only restrictive. There are plenty of great lenses on the market that will AF on the D60.

For me only the 50mm 1.8 is the one I'm missing from my kit bag but it's not a big deal.

For the current price of the D60 you can't go wrong. I would even buy a D40 again.

Personally I don't like the feel of Canons alternative and it is far more expensive.

the kit lenses 18-50 and 50-200 on the d40 are great.
if you're looking at entry level, i've found these two awesome

just out of interest, what did you go for in the end?

also what are the differences say from d40x and d60?

I agree with the comments, get a D80 and the 18-55mm VR kit - it's a great lens and quite wide at 18mm.

If you want to make most out of your budget, buy a good second hand D50. It works with almost all lenses and is well over-engineered for it's target market. It's discontinued now but is a fantastic camera and I wouldn't upgrade only for a D300/700.

As said, look at the d80 or even a canon 40d. It all depends what your price is really?

Got a D60 myself and loving it. AF not a huge issue but probably, if I'm honest, knowing what I know now, I'd have been better saving up and getting a D90.

More than happy with my D60.

I bought it because I was new to DSLR photography and wanted a camera to help me climb the steep learning curve. I am more than happy with it so far.

It wasnt over expensive I have 2 lenses which for now are more than adequate. I dont intend ever packing up work to do photography full time so I think the D60 will do me fine for the next couple of years.

No regrets.

I've sold a number of images from my D60.

No one cares what camera you use, really :)

Good point.

The point I was trying to make is that better cameras cost more money and unless I was going to try to make a living from photography I would not invest anymore money into a camera than I have already done.

I like your D60 photos by the way.
