Hi guys,

I've recently taken delivery of a SB600 from Kerso (Great seller BTW)

I will be upgrading my camera in 6months or so to get a D90.

From what I can gather, I cannot get the SB600 to fire off camera with D60 without the help of some wireless triggers or cable etc.

The D90 will be able to run as a master and trigger the SB600.

If the above is correct I am looking for the cheapest possible way to trigger the flash off camera with the D60. Even if I go down the road of a cable.

I want to try my hand a doing portraits with OCF and master is as best I can before the D90 comes along.

Please let me know if I've got any of the basic understanding wrong.

Cheers

Sounds dead right to me

Depending what you mean by OCF, you could do it at short distance with a dedicated cord for about £20 and retain i-TTL auto.

Otherwise, the best way is manual-only with a Yongnuo RF-602 radio trigger set. £28 from here post #2 http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=157807 They work really well, but don't get the (even) cheaper ones IMHO.

Many thanks for your reply.

Am I right in thinking TTL flash is surely always the way to go, especially at my early stage of getting to grips with flash.

If I didnt have the TTL flash capabilities, I would have to key in the flash power for every pic (trial and error) is that correct?

And I will get the TTL with the CLS on the D90.

Do more expensive triggers carry the TTL capabilities? I'm not looking to spend too much I'm just asking.

So it looks like the cable route is the one for me

Been searching the correct cables, can you provide a link to one, to make sure I'm on the right lines.

Cheers

This is the cable you want, SC-28 or SC-29, but they are expensive at over £50.
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-nikon-sc-28-ttl-remote-cord/p1005560 It retains i-TTL auto, which is very nice, but is short. You can link two together.

Loads of copies on ebay for much less, just as good. Here's one I found at random. I think you can get longer ones which would be much more useful. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/For-Nikon-Fla...temQQimsxq20091104?IMSfp=TL091104177004r35854

How useful i-TTL exposure control is depends on what you're shooting, and how accessible the remote guns are. If you're doing simple portraits with one flash, then it's really no trouble at all to fire off a test shot and adjust the flash output manually. A bit different if one flash is up a tree and another inside a car or whatever. You'll be doing a few test pics to get the lighting right anyway, in which case a set of RF-602 triggers is the way to go for sure.

All the other i-TTL options are expensive, but if you're upgrading the camera just to get a commander flash built in, then you could get a separate commander unit SU-800 and maybe come out evens on cost. SB800 flash has commander built in too.

I don't know of any radio triggers that do i-TTL. Pocket Wizard have one coming soon, but it'll be £400.

I'd go manual as its really not that hard to pick up, and it gives you soooo much more creative control

Cheers for your reply.

I think I will opt for a cable like the one on fleabay.

I am assuming I will be able to switch to manual on the SB600 anyway then I have the best of both worlds.

I would like to see what the camera chooses on the i-TTL and compare with what I can select manually and learn that way.

The D90 upgrade isn't just for the CLS commander setting but an upgrade in general.

Thanks again

I dunno, I find my manual ocf flash stuff works better than with the flash on shoe or ttl on cord. There's more repeatability and experimentation and it just tends to look good

apparently I'm not having a good words day today

That's not entirely true ..... whilst manual is good for exactly repeatable results of one location / subject - TTL gets you the shot when working quickly and can help with creativity and not stifle it

I bow to superior wisdom, I suck at ttl flash but I have only ever used it on shoe or on a cord, multiple ttl ocf might rock ;)
