Yip very, hopefully the D90 will be alot better than just a minor update & priced around the 450D proberly a little bit more.

Not a great move from Nikon from where im sitting. Depending on what the price of the Canon 400D/450D goes down to, the D60 looks like a much weaker option.

After the release of probably Nikons best - and likely, most popular prosumer camera, the D300, i'd have expected a little more from the D60, especially with the 450D offering a LOT more in the same price bracket, i think this may be the achilles heel for Nikon, infact it'll probably do a lot for sales for Canon.

I suspect what Nikon are trying to do is undercut the price of the entry level Canons by some margins. From what i've seen the 450D is going to cost a fair bit more than the D40X is currently going for. So I would expect the D60 to go for a similar price to the model it replaces. Still not convinced this is going to conquer the market.

I think I'll just buy a new badge and eyecup for my D40x no-one will ever know!

Comments are a bit harsh so far I think! I'm a touch underwhelmed by the D60, but some key new items which have not been mentioned are the inclusion of ADR (Adaptive Dynamic Range), and that EXPEED engine is included (presumably improved speed and colour), and improved metering.

At the entry stage of the market I'm not sure that so many bells and whistles are wanted by the market Nikon are targetting - a camera which pumps out great pictures but with minimal items which NEED user input. Not the preferred tool of most people here I guess, but I guess it will fit Nikon's market - the "get your feet wet" camera, before moving up to something else.

:agree:

It's not as bad as people are saying.

True, on the face of it there's not much difference with the D40, but when you start looking deeper its got some nice features.

Still no built in AF i,m sorry i just don,t get this, i did,ent get it when they launched the D40 and D40X,(supposed to be an upgrade to the D50 which had AF)and certainly even more so i don,t get it now with the D60

The D60 is against the 400D, Canon are going to still market it as the new budget DSLR
The D90 will go up against the 450D.

But still if i had a choice of either the D60 or 400D as my First DSLR i would go 400D not being bias or anything
being a Canon owner but that what i would choose.

The D90 will compete with the 40D, I would have thought, not an entry level 450D.
You have to use the cameras and feel the difference, the D70 and 400D are miles apart in build quality alone, I see no reason for that to change with the D90.
But.....ya never know....

I thought the D300 compete's against the 40D
The D90 will sit between the D60 & D300
Just like the 450D will sit's between the 400D & 40D

Lol anyways we find out proberly today or tomoz what the D90 will have.

Nope, I mean you can compare anything with anything if you want, I dont know why 40d d300 comparisons keep cropping up apart from just general interest, in a fight to the death nobody without brand loyalty would choose a 40d in a rumble with d300, I dont think its fair on the 40d, its not even a pro body.
30/40d is d80/200 territory.
It wont do either manufacturer any good to place their products in direct competition, because the choice would be simply one or the other and lead to a cut throat price war, so all models are carefully placed.
The D300 is much closer to a 5d than 40d and indeed surpasses it in many respects, but its not exactly like for like.
Its pretty clear what D3's target is, but again not exactly like for like.
Make no mistake the D300 has totally knackered Canons product placement game plan, they need to get a new 5d out or something because at the moment unless your heart is set on fullframe, d300 is the better choice....an un-partizan choice.
I am partizan, but I'm not blind

D40/D40X+D60 v 400D/450D
D80/D200 v 30D/40D
D300 v 5D & maybe one of the earlier D's, depends on the features important to you.
D3 v ....depends on the features important to you.

non exactly like for like but as close as it gets.

Looks like a good camera to me, processor and other goodies from the 'next-gen' Nikons (D3, D300) but at a reasonable price point. At the end of the day this is going to help relative newbies get some killer shots.

The D40 was panned by the forums at large, but has been a huge success and has been credited with finally pushing Nikon ahead of Canon...so I think Nikon probably know what they are doing.

If it had an AF motor I would have considered this as a replacement for my D50, as I really would like the new tech but can't stretch to a D300, I guess a D90 is the one Nikon will be pitching squarely at me.
