Nikon D5xxx Owners Thread

Hi guys,I've now had my D5100 just over a week (handy for the snow).
Just found this thread after a fewopen questions in the general forum space.

IkariWarrior, what do you think of the 35 1.8? A Nikon I presume. I was thinking of getting one as it is a good price.

I am also searching for a ultra wide lens like the Sigma 10-24 f4. Although not sure weather to save more and get the f3.5 version or go that little bit wider ie, Sigma 8-16 or Tokina 11-16.

The 35mm f1.8 is a great lens, just make sure you get the G model so it will auto focus on yoyur D5100.
the D model will not auto focus

The 35 mm lens seems extremely popular and although I have not used one or seen any pictures taken with one I did look about for a bargain a couple of weeks ago.

Nikon were giving £20 cash back at the time but this has sadly ended.

If anyone has one of these lenses on a d5100 you must let us know what it is like and how it performs.

yes, looking for feedback on that lens (35mm f1.8).
I wish I had bought it when on offer as they go for £120 on Ebay so would of only lost £10 if I didn't like it

Any idea if the D5100 can do photos like this?

With the right person and the right lens I don't see why not

Right person!? What about a newbie with loads of time?

Whats a good starting point? I was thinking high iso, fast lens good location. I would guess a too longer exposure would cause blur as those little points of light move very fast.

Sorry, This is not really the place for this (It's the D5100 owners thread)
However a search of this forum or a quick google for Astrophotography will get you for info than you could ever want. Also search on flickr for "milky way" most pictures on there will have the camera settings posted alongside.
Best to treat your first few trips as experience, and see anything you get worth keeping is a bonus. Have a look at my flickr link below and you will see what I mean... Good luck.

It's a really nice lens for the price and feels very balanced on the D5100. I've found it to be very sharp and quick to focus. You can use it wide open at 1.8, although out of focus 'bokeh' can be a bit harsh, and is more pleasing slightly stopped down. At this price you really cant go wrong!

Hi guys, just joined the club :)
I bought a d5100 about a month ago as my first dslr camera and so far its excellent :D
I also have a 50mm 1.8 and 18-105.
looking forward to learn lot of tips here...

New club member checking in :)

Been using it for about 4 weeks and finding it easier to use.

I've now started looking for a new lens, Minefield!!

I'm new to the forum (hi all :) ) but I've had the D5100 since July 2011. It was my first DSLR and it was absolutely perfect for learning photography. I love it.

I've upgraded now and should receive the D600 by Wednesday.

Okay, I'm back in the game! 5100 unboxed and battery on charge. Hope the weather is good tomorrow!

Worryingly i'm already contemplating the next lens, fancy a prime something or other, fancy a 35 or maybe a 50 for some street shooting. Wifey is gonna kill me!

35mm or lower for street.

Im also a new owner of a D5100 and was wondering if there are settings that should be made to the camera using the onboard menus/settings .In the past ive had bridge cameras and other forum users have suggested altering settings to get the best results ,example - contrast -1 ,sharpness +2 ....ETC
Is the D5100 best left as standard or are there settings to be altered to help get the best results.Hope you understand what im asking .

I would say the majority on TP shoot raw, so adjusting contrast etc.. does not effect raw files.

Don't tell her, she will not notice the difference between a kit lens and a prime, unless she is a photographer too of course.:)

Hi guys,

Just after some suggestions for some indoor learning ideas. I've got a D5100 and want to learn some more about it to get more towards manual shooting. As I'm working long days at the moment and its dark outside when I get home I want something to do of an evening. My ideas so far:

1) Buy a small tripod and take some pictures of a willing subject
2) Find a willing subject (waiting for my Danbo to arrive in the post!)

So what I'm hoping for is some ideas on what I can do and learn from it. I'm tempted to buy some books but think I can probably find enough resources online. What do you think?

Thanks in advance for any ideas :D

Kindle and amazon free books are your friends
Search on here for kindle, free books are posted up all the time, some are good, some are awful

Another new guy here...

Can anyone recommend a case to fit inside my backpack for when im cycling?
(usually have a few bike tools as well as sketchpad, pencils ect)

Hi Chaps. Literally just bought a Nikon D5100 an hour ago online. I KNOW you will probably all say to avoid the bloomin' place but yes I did purchase off eBay (cringe).
A good deal though in my eyes. 6 month old D5100 body in excellent condition with screen protector since new, all the usual kit (strap etc), a 50mm 1.8 AF-S Nikkon lens and a 18-70mm lens for £430 delivered.

The cameras are going for £350+ in good used condition with normal lens and the 50mm 1.8 AF-S are going between £100 and £150. Not to mention that the 18-70mm lens seems to have better reviews than the standard kit lens.

Opinions??
It should be arriving on Saturday so I'm well happy :)

Thanks to everyone for posting such a wealth of information!

Ben

Nothing wrong with eBay if you find a good seller who has taken care of their kit and have good feedback. :)

Welcome to the club. It's a cracking little camera.

I second the ebay route as well, like everything else just be careful and research the seller

Ive had my D5100 a few days now, bought 2nd hand on here.
I had a Panasonic Lumix G1 for 3 years and loved it!
I got frustrated at times as it was a little limited, but as my first ever DSLR I learnt a great deal from it and really enjoyed using it.
I felt it was time to upgrade and chose the D5100, and so far I'm very impressed with it.
Ive now got to get out of all the habits I had with the G1, but I'm sure that should'nt take long.
The only thing that I do find frustrating so far is not being able to review the shot taken in the viewfinder. I found that very handy on the G1, especially in bright sunlight!
I'm obviously still learning with the D5100, and taking shots outside the other day I really struggled to see the shot on the screen after to see how it came out.
Has anyone got any tips regarding that?

Also, are there any threads on here for shots taken with the D5100? I enjoyed the G1 photos thread, but couldn't see one for the Nikon.

Time to check-in, I too got mine on eBay this week, first DSLR after using a Fuji s9600 for a few years. Only fired a few test shots so far but I can already tell the vast difference in feel and responsiveness.

Already feeling the urge to buy more kit (all the gear and no idea).

Forum has been brilliant for researching kit etc so I'm looking forward to being a proper poster!

New owner here also :)

Won a d5100 on eBay this morning with kit lens and a 55-200 lens(around £200 plus I think on its own new) for the grand sun of £401 :) so in happy. Comes with remote and an extra charger etc.

The seller says its done around 1600 photos. Is there a way to check how many its done when I get it? And at what point has a camera done too many? I guess you can get them serviced when they reach a certain amount?

Cheers
