Nikon D5xxx Owners Thread

Ah!

We're getting somewhere now Mark. When i half press the shutter release it gets rid of the image review. Now, is there a way of doing this without having to half press the shutter release?

Sorted. Thanks Mark.
Just switch off image review and everything as it should be. Thanks again

why turn off image review..........:nono:

it is a powerful tool IF you set it to show the HISTOGRAM

this will immediately show you the exposure range of the shot, and if you have clipped the highlights or shadows

the 'bulk' of the histogram should be slightly to the Right of centre
adjust the +EV -EV value to get it correct and re-shoot

if you are clipping both the shadows AND highlights, the dynamic range is too large and you need to reduce the contrast with either a CPL or a ND filter

you cannot see this without the histogram - so leave the image review ON

just 'tap' the shutter release to close the Image review - not a big deal IMO...............:D

Which is the way i need to go Mark. Most of my shots are for a local non league football team so i frame - shoot then quickly reframe shoot etc which is why i need to refocus straight away. Obviously this means i can't sit back to review shots immediately so it makes sense to turn the image review off. During a break in play i can press the playback to review as you suggested.

simply rotate the display at the back so its covered, - no review ,
rotate back when u want reviews. easy
;)

Hi Everyone, Could anyone recommend a spare battery for the D5000 please.

What is the best make to get and what supplier do you use

Cheers

I brought a second battery from amazon for £8.

Obviously it's not a nikon one but it's 1200mha and seems to last the same amount of time as the original nikon one.

I got a spare battery when I bought my camera, then got a grip off fleabay with 2 batteries for around £30, batteries are good and as you have two in the grip it lasts for ages ;)

I started a thread a while ago with some info for D5000 users which i found on the net,

Thought i might as well add it here also, not sure if its already been covered.

Worth a read but basically I have turned off the Auto distortion control and now I get continuous shooting when shooting Jpeg and RAW (although the RAW does start to stall after about 10 images)

I always thought it was just the spec of the camera but it appears having the ADC turned on really slows down the buffer.

Can't seem to find a specific thread for D5100 owners but and there must be some of us around. There is one for the D3100 and the D7000 so I thought it was about time we had one.

I don't actually pick mine up until I return to the UK next week but am looking forward to it as I used to have a D40x so am looking at a big improvement ... I hope.

I have kept my 70-300mm af-s lens and am getting the 18-55mm VR kit lens with the camera.

I have one. Interested in any tips anyone else has on them. I'm loving mine so far, first dslr i have had.

I downgraded from full frame to a D5100 :-) using 35 1.8, 50 1.8, and 105 2.8 VR macro. I have a small sb400 flash as a backup but mostly shoot with ambient light. Even though its no FF, I have no problems using it at iso 3200 or even 6400 if necessary. A bit of noise never hurt anybody, enjoy the images you make! :-)

I have a D3, A D2X and and a D300, but still prefer to use my D5100. As Ray has said, it's very comfortable upto ISO6400, and is very nearly a match for my D3 (just not quite).

Very light, very easy to use, good battery life, great Video (albeit without manual control) and excellent exposure, and excellent resolution from it's 16mp (D7000) sensor.

Actually, because I was so used to my D3 and D2x bodies, it felt too small, so I added a really cheap Mielke grip to mine, and it improves the feel 100% (and takes 2 batteries).

The articulated screen is a joy to use, and certainly makes it more expensive bigger brothers look a little backward on that front. Absolutely love playing around with the effects modes (especially selective colour and minature).

The only thing I have changed is to select the custom button function below the flash to ISO, and have ISO displayed in the viewfinder rather than frames remaining.

Negatives, well it doesn't have a built in focus motor, so AFS lenses only (unless you don't mind manual focus), doesn't have wireless CLS master function for the flash, and only one command dial (not two like I'm used to). But to be honest for the price, I think it's a fantastic fun little camera, and coupled with decent glass would be hard to tell apart from much more expensive bodies.

Thanks for feedback can't wait to pick it up.

Was considering a grip but have a question do you need to have two batteries in it or can you get away with just the one, was hoping to get the second one a little later on.

Just one will work fine. Bear in mind though that the vertical shutter release on these grips requires a cable from the camera (under the left hand flap) to the grip itself.

I don't use the vertical release so no issue for me.

I've had the D5100 for about 6 months now and have shot somwhere in the region of 2000 frames with it.
It is my first DSLR after moving on from my Minolta film camera and although it is a brilliant little camera I do find the endless menus slightly frustrating when I can't find what I'm looking for. think I would prefer more buttons but I'm sure that would add to the cost.
Still experimenting to find the ideal setup includind contrast and saturation etc but enjoying it. Wish I had saved a little more for a nice quality lens.
Any tips on this camera are greatly received.

Hi All,

Having had my D5000 for a while now, finally got a Jessops 360 external flash unit. Had no problems using it on the camera, but struggling to trigger it whilst it off...Read somewhere that all I would need to do is swith on the 'Slave' mode on the flash unit and use it with the pop-up flash which triggers the sensor..however, this hasnt helped. Whilst it triggers to external flash unit, it does not sync with the shutter opening leaving the photos without any flash light.

So where am I going wrong..? Or is it that I would now have to enter the world of triggers, etc. Thanks in advance.

Anand.

Shoot in shutter priority and slow the speed down until you expose for both flashes. Try 1/200th of a sec and work from there.

Thanks will try..

Hi all, I am selling the following in the classified section if anyone is interested

Nikon Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Lens
Thanks

Hi all, I've posted in another thread but thought I'd post in here too. I'm off to shoot the northern lights in 2 weeks and am looking at a new lens. I've been dithering between the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non vc and the sigma 17-70 2.8-4 for days now and just wondered if any D5000 owners had any experience of these lenses in night time conditions such as the lights and lightning shots? I also storm chase in the summer months over in the states so the lens would be used then too.

Any info much appreciated :)

As a newby to Digital photography I have tried to get my head around the user manual that comes with the D5100 to get the most out of it.

Now, is it just me or is the manual just so basic or to the point that it is next to no good whatsoever ??!!

I looked at picking up a book that would explain in a little more detail and came across the David Busch's Nikon D5100.

I've thumbed through the 400 or so pages and it seems to be very good. Thought I'd mention it as I'm sure some of you may be thinking the same. It not only explains the camera and its functions including example pictures of the different settings and results etc but also gives some advice on photography in general.

The book was priced up at £20.99 but went through the check out at £15.74 which was a bonus !

Lets hope my photography improves as a result !!

I bought this book too being new to DSLR's. Very helpfull especially if you keep your camera to hand when reading the book so you can try things as you go. As you said, the manual with the camera is rubbish.

Got mine at Christmas and loving it so far.

Just bought a Sunpack PZ42X and I'm looking for a way to use it off camera. I think I will need a pair of wireless triggers and was looking for some pointers towards make/models. Can anyone help?

The "proper" manual can be downloaded as a PDF, but that seems a bit penny pinching of Nikon to me!
My father-in-law has a D3100 with a similar pamphlet style manual, rather than a full one. I emailed Nikon when he first got the camera about the lack of manual, and they sent me a proper printed full one.
When I got my D5100 about 6 months ago, I emailed them for a proper manual, and was told that there wasn't a hard copy available and to use the pdf!!
I may try emailing them again, as I find it difficult to fiddle with the camera whilst reading off the computer screen, and I don't feel that I am using the D5100 to its full potential.
I see some people recommend the David Bausch book. I just wondered if it was specific to the D5100, and if it was aimed at beginners, or higher, as I know all the basics, but I'd like to learn how to get the best out of the D5100.
Many thanks

Hi All.

Firstly I love my d5100 allot.

But the only niggle I have come across is that long exposures are limited to 30 seconds which really limits certain shooting styles that I want to shoot with. I dont understand why its limited to 30 seconds; its literally just a software barrier, not hardware. A firmware update from Nikon would fix it. My old body would take much longer exposures.

Has anyone found a solution or work-around?

Of course I could just use it on BULB but I dont fancy holding down the shutter release for minutes at a time and it makes the whole process more laborious.

Wondering if there are any remotes out there that will "hold the shutter down" for x amount of time so you dont have to.

Any advice? cheers

No advice on the long exposure problem, but I agree that the D5100 is a great camera!

Cammyammy

You will need a remote release to do this.

1. Put the 5100 into M mode

2. in the shooting menu select Long Exposure NR to On.

3. In Release Mode select Quick response remote

4. Now use the command dial to select TIME this only appeares if you do step 3

Now when you press the remote release it will stay open for up to 30minutes or until you press the remote again.

Hope this helps

Hi guys I have noticed when I use my live view my battery drains real quick anybody else have this problem...

I think I read somewhere that using Live View uses 3-4 times battery power than shooting normally.

Just back from my honeymoon in Kenya with my 5100 and really happy with how it performed. This trip was the real reason why i bought the camera last year. Now 3300 shots to sort through! I bought a second battery after xmas but never used it, no matter how many shots i took through the day, it always lasted and was recharged at night. Never used liveview though.

I visited Kenya many years ago with my Minolta 7000.
Had a great time on safari and took some lovely shots.
have you got any pictures to share with us??

Got mine a few days ago, was going to get a D7000 initially but they are impossible to find at the moment, and after handling them both decided I actually like the lighter body more.

Loving the Tammy 17-50 2.8 with it too, great combo.

Yes mate,

The book is specific for the Nikon D5100 and has clear pictures and explanations for all of its settings.

I am finding it very useful but this is my first digital camera.

Might be worth finding a copy and having a thumb through before committing to any purchase.

Ive just bought one of these to trial for a few months.
Basically going to stick a 10-24 on it, then in Auto mode an see how it copes. Most likely going to give it a run out at some weddings and maybe the odd event where the biggest it gets printed is 9x6. At Wedding, second body is only there for the odd WA shot or as a backup, so really need to be looking at getting a d800 soon as its released :)

If its good i will keep it and if not, might step up to a D7000, but seeing as thats nearly £900 for what i need it for, the D5100 seem perfectly adequate (especially as HAD to use a Canon 1100D last time and got some cracking results from it).

Would love to see more examples on here.
