Yes
When the camera (Nikon D5300) is in manual mode and I press the exposure compensation button(it's the button used to switch the single control dial from aperture control to shutter control) the rear screen lights up. Is there anyway of stopping that happening?

Try Menu - Set Up Menu (Spanner) - Auto Info Display - OFF

EDIT: Nope - that doesn't work!

I thought exposure compensation was to over ride the camera's choice of shutter speed. If in full manual and you choose a shutter speed, by altering the exposure comp aren't you just over riding your original shutter speed that you set?

Would it not be better to just choose a faster or slower shutter speed, at the beginning?

No. In manual you would just alter the shutter speed or aperture by altering either one of them, the exposure compensation is for auto modes. In manual mode the exposure compensation button is to alter the shutter speed or aperture dependant if the button is pressed or not. There is only one control wheel on a d5300 not two, so it acts as shutter and aperture control.

For some reaosn when I press the bec button it lights the info scren up at the rear?
