What's everybody's view on this then? It will be my first SLR camera. I'm not all that bothered with the D3000 series, or should I be? Glass?

Photography interests: Wildlife, cars/motorsport and aviation primarily. I am in to herpetology so I will be doing a lot of macro. A friend is selling me a 105mm AF macro lens for £100. It's the model below the VR. I've been looking at a 60mm as well, wouldn't mind a wide angle piece as well in the future.
 
I must say i am very pleased with mine although i have barely had it a month, it was not my first SLR though as i had a sony for a while before but switching over was easy enough. as its your first i would certainly suggest playing around and also have the manual around i used it for the first couple of days, as for lenses i only have a sigma 50mm macro 1 thing i would say is if you do not know already your lenses need Auto focus in them as the camera does not, not a big deal if you like manual focus but if you do want auto focus just make sure you get the correct lenses :)
 
The D5100 is an excellent camera and you'll be pleased with the results once you get to grips with it. Be aware that the 105mm lens you're getting won't auto-focus with your camera as it doesn't have an internal focussing motor. You need to make sure the lenses have AF-S in their description for auto-focus.
 
Thanks. I won't be using the auto focus for macro photography anyway so all is good for me. Although at some point I will invest in the VR version.

What's everybody's favourite lenses?
 
I've got an 18-105 on mine and really like it. I use mine mainly for family pictures so it's a perfect compromise.
 
16-85mm but that was my favourite whichever body it was on.
 
D5100 is an excellent camera and is a great low light performer. As for a lens. I try to use my 35mm f1.8 as much as possible for its sharpness, but for a general walk about I use the 18-105.
 
I am impressed with my d5100 but when I win the lottery I would buy the 7100........:D
