I've finally got myself a camera, I ended up getting a Nikon D5000 with a AF-S NIKKOR 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED lens. I have no idea what that all means, but that's what is written on the lens lol.

If I'm honest I don't have a clue what I'm doing but I've managed to turn it on and take a few photos with it on auto.

Here's my test subject/model

I absolutely love the quality of this thing. So much better than my phone. I'm really looking forward to learning how to use it.

Do you have any suggestions on some videos/articles on using this camera? Just somewhere to start really lol

Congrats on starting your dSLR journey :)

As for learning......a good start for an absolute beginner is read the manual thoroughly.......did it come with its manual? If not I surmise you can download it from the Nikon website plus s likewise the manual for the lens ;)

I have no doubt that you will have questions ????

PS s/he looks like a very willing and patient subject :)

Thanks for the reply, it didn't come with a manual but I've just been on their site and downloaded one for my model. I was gonna ask how do I do the raw image processing that I see people speaking about on here and what it's all about, but to be honest they are coming out just fine the way they are at the moment just using the auto setting lol.

I'm doing a trip to dartmoor tomorrow morning so will give the camera a real good go then. :) and yeah she will do anything for a treat

Thanks, I love taking pictures of her :) one of the reasons I got a new camera really lol

Welcome to the Dark Side.

Sounds as though you are not crawling yet, let alone walking..........so running is some way down the road!

At this stage, I'd just concentrate on taking some images and reading all of the info, that's available on the net. Shooting in RAW and processing, is another game altogether, so learn the basics first.

When you've done that, then learn how to shoot in 'Manual' mode.......and then think about RAW!

Good Luck
