What to do, what to do?

I wan't a nifty fifty sort of lens for everyday pictures of everything or anything but I understand it wont autofocus on a D5000?

So I've been recommended a 35mm? Will this be just as good?

Please bear in mind I'm not prepaired to be spending a fortune on a lens. It only appealed because its less than £200.

Don't know about your camera but I have a D80 and as recomended by forum users I got a 35mm and it is always on my camera. It is a lovely lens. I think jessops do it for 160.
 
I have the D5000 with the 50mm 1.8. I love manual focusing. I enjoy the challenge. :D
 
The 35mm is superb. Apparently Jessops are out of stock on this but I got mine from HK for the same price with a weeks wait for delivery.
 
Another vote for the 35mm. I love using it on my D5000 as they are so light together and you can get some really good images from it.
 
Another thumbs up for the 35mm. I bought mine from the classifieds on here last week and it's not been off the camera since. I spent a long time deliberating whether to go for this or the far more expensive 50mm 1.4g. There'll be a thread about it somewhere. In the end, enough people and reviews persuaded me that 35mm was not only a more useful length but that it's also optically a match for the 50mm 1.4 but half the price. I'm not disappointed so far.
 
The 35mm is next on my list of lens purchases (just hope I can hide it from the missus after my latest purchase).

The 35mm is a more usable size on a cropped sensor camera.
 
I think the nifty fifties are nifties on film/FF sensors on cropped sensors are a bit on the long end. So a 35mm is similar to a 50mm on a FF/film, go for the 35mm I say :)
 
love my 35. even if im using anotherother lens i allways put in on my spare
 
I have the 35mm 1.8 and the 50 1.4g. I couldn't decide whether to get one or the other and did a lot of research. I decided to get the 35mm first as i found that when setting my kit lens to 50 mm indoors i was restricted to room, headshots were good, but if i wanted to fit everyone in i'd be backed up in the corner, so I bought the 35mm first.

I bought my 35mm in December and until 2 weeks ago when i got the 50mm it didn't leave my camera. It's a good all rounder! Definitely one of my faves and sits in the bag whilst i have the 50mm on the camera.

I would get the 35mm over the 50mm as you might find it restrictive for indoor use.
I decided to get the 50mm too as i want to do more portrait shots.
 
Hi guys can I confirm this is the 35mm? As it says 28mm but for use on your 35mm camera?
 
No, that one is a 28mm lens for 35mm film cameras. The one being discussed here is a Nikon 35mm 1.8g AF-s. You should find it for around £150-180 new though stocks are low right now. Used ones are about £120-150
 
Another vote here for the 35mm on a D5000. I love mine.

i've heard only good opinions about 35mm, but i've never tried it myself. I use 50mm and 28mm on my d5000 really a lot, as i try to move away from 18-55mm. Yes, manual focus is tricky and something you need to get used to, but when you do the effects are stunning!
 
Sigma 30 1.4 has that little bit extra light and sorts out most of the problems of the Nikkor (Build, bokeh, CA) if you're willing to shell out the little bit more.
