Nikon D5000 and Sigma 105 macro

I have a Sigma 105 macro lens that according to the internet should work on my D5000 in manual focus only
Only it doesn't :( when i attach it to the camera all the electrics shut down and the data access led at the rear blinks !

The lens works fine on my D200 so i guess theres nowt wrong with it only i cant use that to often as swmbo doesn't know about it yet nor the sigma 70-200 f2.8 either for that matter ;)

I digress anyone have experience with this combo ?, as the 105 is popular among macro aficionados i am hoping there is a simple solution to my problem of these not working together

Odd, have you tried cleaning the contacts on both the lens and camera. Always the first thing to try.

That made no difference at all
If i switch the camera on without a lens attached the electrics work
when i put the sigma on they all shut down
