Yes
When I went to use my new D500 in Manual mode - I wanted to set shutter speed to x and aperture to Y and let the camera set the ISO to give me the proper exposure - the ISO number on the back of the camera is in red when I view the image - even if it is withing the parameters I had set up under Iso sensitivity.
Is the the norm? or am I missing something.

i think that's alright never checked what colour it shows the iso at
cannot check my d500 till mon as were away for the week end

does the pic come out properly exposed without to much noise ?

Yes that’s normal behaviour. It’s red as the ISO is different from the one set when the camera is not in Auto. If you set the camera to ISO 100 and then move to Auto every shots that’s not ISO 100 will show in red on the lcd.

Thanks so much. I thought I was doing something wrong and couldn't find the answer either in the manual or on the net.
