Nikon D50 reading card?

My fathfull D50 now teaching my daughter the art of photography has developed a fault showing 'cha' and will only read some cards but not all, is there a simple cure as she has just started to really get into it with some good results, any help appreciated
 
card too big? ie over 4gb?

or. is the tab on the card being pushed down to protect the card when it is inserted into the camera

Has the card been in the camera for ages (months +)? Try popping it out and putting it in again a couple of tmes.

Can you format the card?
 
This happened a couple of weeks ago on my D50 also, all I had to do was format the card and everything was fine.

Sorry I thought it was 4gb on my D50!

I have an issue with some cards where the locking tab is loose that it is pushed to the locked position when inserting in the camera & moves back to the unlocked position when removed!!!

Could look at the manual I suppose wherever it is!
