I just encountered an odd behavior yesterday with this combination that I hadn't seen before with earlier cameras, and I hadn't noticed it previously on the D5. Sometimes when switching between large distances (near/far) the camera will just give the double triangle and refuse to shift focus. It's not at all consistent but frequent, and if I pump the AF it will focus fine. It happens in any of the AF-d modes greater than d-9 and regardless of which initial AF point is selected.

At first I thought maybe the AF sensor was dirty, but blowing it out hasn't helped. I did test w/ a second TC today and the results were the same.

Is there something else I should look for? Is the V-III TC likely to give better results on the D5? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is this an older AF-S lens?

Nope. It's the VR G prior to the current FL.
Ah ok, I had problems with a 400 f2.8 AF-S with TC's on a D810 ... never resolved and Nikon couldn't explain.

Guessing you already given the contacts a good clean (both lens and camera)?

Had no problems with my 400mm f/2.8G with 2x converter on both D500 and D810, only difference is mine is the mk iii version.

Apparently it’s quite a bit better image quality wise so probably worth an upgrade over the mk ii, not sure if it makes any difference with focussing though.

Didn't know Nikon did a mk iii ... do you mean the VR version?

Looks like I was completely wrong...
It doesn't matter about being wrong, I hope the link may be of help to you or others!
cheers
