Hi,
Im not sure if i'm missing the obvious on my D40x, I have everything set to auto, with my 18-55mm lens with auto focus attatched. It seems the AF-Assist illuminator isn't working, thus causing it not to auto focus. Ive been through every menu and set all to auto. Does anyone have any ideas ? Ive been through the squillion page manual, and couldnt find anything on the illuminator. Im hoping its not a camera fault as I bought it new from ebay, i'm not sure about any warranty. Any suggestions gratefully received !!
:bang:

I think it's one of the focus mode settings, but not necessarily auto. Like, closest subject or something.

It doesn't illuminate on AF-C, only AF-A or AF-S. Can't remember what those are on the D40's menus, doesn't it have pretty pictures of bikes or something?

Just tried a factory reset, it seems to have cured whatever it was......................panic over !!! Thanks for the replies

If I were you, I would still find out what it was though - if it happens again, you'll be better off knowing what to do than a factory reset again!

The fact that it took a reset to do it means it must be an option somewhere. I would look at mine but the Mrs. has got it for the next few weeks in the USA

Just in case you were wondering:

Menu>Custom Setting Menu (Pencil)>AF Assist> ON or OFF

Should do the trick. As previously stated - having the camera set to Manual Focus will also turn it off, but not in the menus.
