cannon 400d help!?
Well after taking photography at school for the past 2 years and enjoying it so much i want my own dslr because im getting tired of borrowing the schools over used and damaged 350d
I will be using the camera for sports and wildlife (mainly birds) and i will probably be getting a 70-300m lens if i do get any of them so i was wondering which would be the best out of the two??

I just got myself the Nikon D40x after weeks of trying to suss the 2 out. Finally went down to how it felt in my hands, NIkon jsut felt soooo nice and canon so plasticy. So id advise local camera shop and playin with both.

Best piece of advice is to go and try them out at Jessops and go from there. The D40x is being discontinued and is now becoming harder to find, so you may want to consider the D60 instead. I was in exactly the same position and ended up going for the Nikon D40x as it just felt sturdier, fit my hand better and they're doing £40 cashback until the end of February.

One of the things with the Nikon is that it doesn't have an in built focus motor so you'll need AFS lenses (HSM is the Sigma equivalent I think) if you want autofocus. All Nikon lenses will work, but non-AFS lenses you'll have to focus yourself. For me this wasn't an issue because I'm sticking with the kit lens for now and will upgrade to an 18-200 VR when I need the extra zoom.

At the end of the day, they are both good cameras and neither takes superior pictures to the other. The Canon may be a better bet as you're used to a 350D but like I said, go and try them out in a shop, that should give you a better idea.

Ok thanks for the advice I went to Jessops and they are both very similar but i have quite big hands and the d40x was more well suited for them so I am leaning towards this one but I may weight and save up some penny's for the d60 as it is a beast :p!! Thanks for all your help!

I will have a near mint D40X with 18-55mm kit lens up for sale in the next few days if you are interested. I just need to get some pics and a description done then it will be going in the for sale section...

That's why I chose the D40x, the Canon just didn't feel quite right in my hands and that's the most important factor of all.

Personally, I'd stay away from importing from Hong Kong via ebay unless they'll refund your import taxes, and even then I'd rather pay a little more to have shouting rights in the UK. If you get stung for import taxes you're probably going to pay £550 for the total package (that's total price btw, not just taxes) and you can get a D60 body and 55-200 for £500 in the UK including full warranty. Check out http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/cat4.html for some deals.

I'm not 100% on this, but I believe Nikon may not honour warranties for the body in the UK on imports. Someone more knowledgeable will be able to tell you that though.

Have you considered going for a D80? It means you can use some of the older (hence cheaper) lenses and you should be able to pick up a fairly high power lens for not much as it doesn't need to be AFS.

Ah i didn't realize it was from hong kong I should really read it all :p.

I just got mine from Hong Kong no probs arrived via fedex in less then 2 days via express. Went through customs no probs, plus got a 2 year g'tee, from power seller with over 30k positive feedback. I got it cheaper then over here with tripod mem card and other bits and bobs well worth it.

A battery grip is the answer then... makes pretty much all of the Canon consumer/prosumer range far more easy to handle. I've had this on both of mine cameras so far and unless I get into the 1D range, I probably will always stick with this idea.

The D40x and D60 are good cameras but just because of the lack of auto focus motor try and find a old D50 or D70/s. Those things are so easy to use and I think are better than the newer Nikon's out. The D60 does have that sensor cleaner which is a good feature.
