I wonder if anyone who owns a D40 / D40x can help me.

I'm looking for a new spare battery for my D40x to use as a back-up if the OE one runs out whilst I'm out shooting and before I can recharge it.

Can anyone recommend a good one from personal experience please ?
 
I bought some for my D60 and they were rubbish, about 60 shots, then it would just drop to empty. The seller sent me another one after I reported it a dud, but that was the same.

Any of the £2.99 + £2.00 postage jobs on Ebay are junk, must have wasted more money trying these than just buying an original!

If anyone can recommend a *decent* generic I'd love to know too :)
 
I bought a cheap spare when I first got my D40 last year. I used it once and then it wouldn't take a charge. Ended up binning it and buying a genuine Nikon battery before going to Le Mans this year.

Don't waste your money on copies. Just go for the real thing. Its cheaper in the long run ;)
 
Well I bought two spares for my D200 from DigitalRev on ebay and they are indistinguishable from the standard battery lasting exactly the same time! My wife's D40x battery is the same. I would suggest all start naming names so that we can all buy reliable ones :)

So thats two votes for DigitalRev

Doesn't Kelso sell batteries? I am sure that he would have got some stick on here if his were not as good as standard ones, it must be worth trying with him too!

I have an Inov8 battery for the D40. I've never noticed a difference from the genuine article, though there's probably some if you test it rigorously. For half the price I'm very happy.

It was a counterfeit, it was sold as a Genuine battery, but was a countefeit - the ink had run on the silver "Nikon" logo, and the hologram was fake :lol:
 
Can't comment on Nikon copies but I've bought quite a few Canon copies from 7dayshop & they last longer than the Canon Originals.

I wouldn't buy any batteries from ebay unless they were from a reputable shop, lithium batteries can be dangerous to you nevermind the camera.
 
cheap generics have always been fine in my case, but they tend not to be as highly rated as they state. If you buy two or three you'll have a charged one so it's worth it imo.
 
Thanks everyone for the very useful input. The Inov8 is a good price from Amazon so will have a go with that one first and let you know how I get on.

Keep listing the good and bad though everyone, to help anyone else looking.
 
Not got any experience of D40 batteries but I have used 7dayshop ones in my D70 and in an Oly compact with no problems.

Even genuine batteries aren't immune from problems - my original D70 battery was recalled by Nikon (en-el3) and was replaced with an en-el3e which also fits my D200 - result!
 
I bought some cheap bay ones just to see.

They were absolute rubbish and went to the recycle centre.
 
Be careful if buying generic batteries for the D40, or indeed any Nikon camera, as Nikon have a function installed which, in theory, prevents them from working with the camera. A lot of the aftermarket makers have obviously found a way round this, but there are still quite a few generic batteries that will bring up a message saying that the battery isn't compatible with the camera. The D300 in particular has an aversion to anything but the real deal, but I've also seem the same problem with a D40, but not with the D50 or D70.

My 7dayshop wonder works fine with my D300 :shrug:
 
i got some from 7 day shop for my d40 and over 8gb of shots later the battery had only used 1 bar out of 3 so that thats pretty good i'd say

I'm sure the 3rd-party manufacturers have gotten round any compatibility issues by now. All I know is that none of the six (from 2 different sources) aftermarket batteries I had for my D80 would work with my D300.
