Someone is offering a Nikon D40 for £190 is this a good buy? so I don't want to seem like a mug if it is not.

Excuse the poor question, but it will be my 1st camera.

thanks
john

Assuming it comes with the kit lens it's an ok price, but you can get one brand new for £220 from amazon.

It depends - firstly is it what you want? It sounds a stupid question, but what do you plan to do with it? It is at the bottom of the Nikon family of DSLRs so you will need to make compromises.

What does it come with? Is there a kit lens? If not, I'd probably look around unless you have access to some lenses. Is there any memory with it? What else will you need to get going?

Finally, possibly most important, can you afford it? Should you wait for something better? What does it feel like in your hand?

Chris

ive had a D40 now for just under 1 year and for every day use its great, check website, it does feel a little difficult to hold but after a while, like most things it becomes second nature.PS buy it new for £220 as suggested by Foggy

I have seen some stunning results from the Nikon D40 (see melevo,s website for example!!) and if it is within your budget I would probably go for a new one at £220. Its only £30 more and you will be getting a full 2 year warranty.

I entered the world of digital SLR photography just a few weeks ago and I purchased a Nikon D60 as my entry camera. I am thoroughly pleased with it so far and because the learning curve is so steep I intend keeping my D60 for a good while yet until I achieve some good results.

The way I see it, if you can get good, satisfying results from an entry level camera (and with practice you can) then when you do step up you will be more than qualified to do so.

Definately get a new one if its £30 more. But in all honestly, I would probably spend a tad more for a D40X or a D60.

Tbh, I wouldn't. The only real difference is the increase in megapixels and a sensor cleaner. I think you are better off saving the money to put towards a future upgrade, some decent glass or a flash.

some guy on this forum is selling a d40x with a bag and cards and stuff for 250 which imo is a much better buy

just check the for sale section :)

The D40, by all accounts, is an outstanding camera. An excellent starter camera; a wonderful Point & Shoot, for someone who wants to lug a camera around all day and what makes it so sweet is its price. You can easily master it, and get outstanding results with it.

That said, look at the options out there. As has been said, a new D40 is only £30 more, but £30 will buy you a couple of memory cards and a spare battery.

Just shop around and you can't go wrong, one way or the other.

The D40 is an excellent choice as a first DSLR.

As to if £190 is a good price depends of if that includes the kit lens and the condition of the camera. As has been noted for about £30 more you can get the camera with kit lens new - you have to decide if a new camera with the full year Nikon warranty is worth the extra.

Hi, I just received my new D40 from Amazon. Have had a good play around and am proper happy with the kit and pictures. When compared to the compact I had before it is so so so so.. much better.

Decided to buy new in the end for warranty, peace of mind and the fact that there is so little price difference between new and 2nd hand. Really good value to start into the world of DSLR's and gives you a little extra to spend on lenses.

buy it now rather than doing what I did and thinking about it for a couple of weeks!

Hi

thanks for the input, I decided to buy new from Amazon, at least I have a 2 year warranty with it.

Currently sat on the side of my desk, waiting for the memory card to arrive as well.
