Hi

I was hoping ti get some assistance. I am a novice to DSLR as only bought my camera a few weeks.

Got the entry level Nikon as it seems like a good starting point and no real point is pedning alot of money initially.

Could anyone recommend a good 2nd lens, i find the 18-55 lens a little limiting, and was looking to get a lens for lanscapes, portraits etc ie 55-200, 70-300.

Could you please help and offer your thoughts on the best options for me

i have found the following lenses-are these useful for a beginner or rubbish

thanks

Best options - Nikon 55-200 VR (around £130-140) or the Nikon 70-300 VR (around £300). Either of these will work perfectly with your D40.

The Sigma you link to will not autofocus with your D40 (Camerabox make this clear on the page you linked to), so stick with the Nikon glass. However, the Nikon 55-200 you posted the link to is the old, non-vr version which isn't worthhaving when the vr version is only an extra £30 or so....

Hi Billy and welcome. The Sigma will give you a better reach but you may want to try one on your camera before you buy. Some (my own one included) are a little on the "soft" side wide open. Focus was a bit soft on all images until you stopped down to about f8. It was quickly swapped for a good copy though. I don't know if this lens will autofocus on the D40. Someone will be along shortly to let you know. Best bet is to try one in Jessops before you part with your cash. Don't have any experience of the Nikon lens.

Thanks FitP I was too slow in typing my reply!

Hi billy,

Im a noob to, just got the nikkor 55-200mm lens and i thinks its great but like i said im a noob so not had that much experiance on lens yet . If you do get the 55-200mm when your taking shots of still objects and using a tripod turn the vr off as it looks for vibrations and actually makes slight vibrations itself and you get some slight blurring . Oh and when looking for lens for the d40 make sure the lens has af-s in its description there the ones that will auto focus hope this help :)
