how do you turn the flash off? ive lost my manual

I don't know how to do that, but I do know where to get a downloadable manual for the D40. Hopefully that will save you having to ask other questions in future. You can get it from the Nikon Europe website here.

Push the pop up down so that it is closed.

either close the flash or if your in macro mode or something like that,

on the side of the camera near the flash theres a flash button (lighting symbol) hold that and use the exposure wheel adusture the flash mode.

its a lot easier than it sounds

If your in Auto mode then it will pop up on its own. If you are in any of the other modes (Aperture priority, Shutter priority, manual etc) then you will have to press the botton on the side of hte flash to get it to pop up. Just push the flash down to close it.

if u turn the mode selector wheel theres a non flash mode next to the auto mode keeps the flash down all the time hope that helps
