Can someone assist with this query if possible, please?

I am interested in getting the Nikon D40 as my first Digital SLR http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/asin/B000KIX65S/digicamreview-21/

Can someone tell me if the one on the amazon link comes with the auto focus lens? I've read that the D40 comes only with manual focus and auto focus is only available seperately. Is this true? The amazon price is good, but does not state if auto focus lens comes with the package? Could someone take a look at the link and advise?

Also, my brother recently purchased the Sony a200 and told me not to get the same camera as the a200 is not that good.

Is the D40 a better camera to buy than the a200?

Is there a better entry level camera out there that is even better than the a200 or the D40 and around the same price?

Thanks

There has been a few 'head to head' reviews of the D40, A200 and the Canon EOS1000 in a few of the photo mags this past month or two. The Sony A200 comes out just about top in these due to the in camera shake reduction function, something the other two don't have. The D40 has fewer pixels and is about 2 or so years old now.

Due to the price of the A200, that was another factor in that camera getting a high score in the value for money stakes at the moment. OK, it's not the BEST camera out ther, but for the price it seems it's a good deal.

Thanks.

Hmm. Now having a re-thing and might go for the Sony model-probably the A350 (just to get a better model than my bro) :D

Didn't realise the d40 is that old.

both the A300 and A350 are very good cameras, and great value for money.i have the A350 and am very pleased with it...so much so,i'm gonna keep it when i get the A700 in a few weeks..

a mate of mine has the nikon D40,and although he likes it,is ready to move to something else as he's starting to find it lacking.

That is what confuses me. Being new to such cameras, when websites say "body only", I keep thinking, will they be posting it out without any lens as pictured?

matt b: I think it is certainly the A300 pictured.

Jessops are doing A300 exclusive and its a cracking camera!!!

cheers

i moved from nikon d40 to a300
both great camera's, but decided i wanted to build a system, and the d40 was lacking for that, on building on lenses etc. decided sony, as they can use minolta etc, and have inbuilt body focus motor, and the d40 didn't which meant lens choices were more expensive.

although if i had the money, think i would have chose d90, but happy with the a300 with the bonus of live view. a300 is the same as a200, but has tiltable screen and liveview

i went for body only and then 18-200, although wanted 18-250, but budget didn't allow

Good choice. I've been looking at one for the wife as she does not like the feel of my canon.

yeah sorry, i bought the a300 body only and then got sony 18-200 lens
some say not as sharp but wanted a wider range zoom for a general lens

OK. Makes sense. Being a newbie to DSLR, I'll stick to the standard package they provide with the camera.

Go to shop and compare live view, focussing and actual taking shot on both cameras A300 and Canon 1000 and u will make the right choice...

Plus A300 lens is 18-70...

cheers

Aj

Canon 1000d body only is available for £199 on t'internet. see the shopping forum.
Leaving you a wege for a good lens

I'm going to go to Jessops in Victoria, London to have a looky at the a300.

you've missed the cash back offer sony were doing, ended 31 dec 08

that's not how it worked. you buy it, either in full in whatever payment or even on a credit term and with the reciept you send it off to sony and claim back and they send a cheque ;-)

only thing i find a little annoying about the sony a300 compared to my d40, is that it's a noisey motor. maybe because it's constantly auto focus, with motor working sound

Really? I never knew that. Hmm. Will be looking into this cashback think.

I'm going to take a plung with the a300 tomorrow.

That cashback offer did look good, thinking about it know. Oh well.

yeah, that's why i went for it, saving £40 to put towards more toys for the camera ;-)

I moved from the Canon 400D to the Sony a200 just for the in built stability. The canon was a great camera but would not work well in the hands of a poor photographer....... I have not looked back since getting the a200 and really like and enjoy this as a working platform. Remember you are buying into a system rather than just a camera, and sony are beginning to come good in the camera market. Sony produce good and very good lens and third party lens are also becoming more available. Whatever you buy, good luck and have fun.

sony have extended the offer upto 31/01/09

have they!
darn i rushed out to get the sony grip when it would have been better to next pay day ;-(

My son was looking at a D40 today in Jessop's.

The 20 something year old salesman came out with this lot, I only told him I had an a200 afterwards, at which point he started to back track a bit -

1/ Only ever buy a Canon or Nikon. (could'nt give a reason when I asked why)
2/ All the old Minolta users don't like the fact that Sony bought them out.
3/ The Sony cameras are badly made.
4/ All magazine reviews back up his views.
