I read a few articles where people had bought these reverse rings and used the kit lens reversed to take some macro pics, anyway i got a ring for xmas however struggling to get any decent pics, any pointers/tips please

You need to post examples - it's difficult to know what's gone wrong unless we can see the pics.

My first thought though is that you say you've used the kit lens - which will almost certainly be a "G" lens with no aperture control, meaning you're shooting with the aperture at it's smallest.

What exactly is wrong with your pics? Too dark/light, out of focus?

You'll have to be VERY close to the object you are photographing. And the aperture will be wide open, since there is no electronic control.

A way to get around this is to set a reasonable macro aperture (like f/8.0 or f/10) while the lens is mounted properly on the camera, then hold the DoF preview button while dismounting the lens (thus the lens is set at that aperture). But this will make the viewfinder very dark.
