For my sons 10th Birthday, I am not sure which model to go for. he enjoy being able to choose a lens which is why I am even considering a DSLR...he already has a Sony Cybershot - 4 years old now, and he hates it because its too small and he is very aware that the scene via the viewfinder is super small compared to the D200.

Both are roughly the same price, but which one is best?

Gary.

Maybe get the G9 for him. Would you let him have a go with your dslr gear if he is with you whilst snapping? That way you both got one of each to share

Yeah maybe try picking up a second hand D80 body as would you be sharing lens?

I am tempted to go for the D80 - however, its a lot of lolly if I buy it new.

I am absolutely fighting the urge to buy a D3 and let my son use my D200. Three things are stopping me.

1: The insane price of the D3

2: The thought of a 10 year old with a D200 is obscene

3: Do I have the skill to get any more out of the D3 than I currently can my D200? I think not.

Problem is, plonking £500 down on a cheaper nikon body when i really want a D3 seems mad also.

I haven't a clue what to do.

Canon A570. Manual, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority modes. Its got enough there for him to learn photography.

I have to say Adam's idea might be the best alternative, a nice s/h d70s - not as many pixels so the D80 but half the price and a great learning tool - in fact I am off out this arvo and the D200 is staying at home and my trusty D70s is coming with, you will find it good enough and your sone wont have too many problems handling its smaller [than d200] body or weight

I still use my D70s for landscape and general tog stuff, its a cracking camera for a beginner.....IMO of course.

KevinH's little girl aged around 10 years, was at the Chester Zoo meet and handling her 400D quite impressively, so I'd have no qualms about going the DSLR route as long as the child is responsible enough to look after it.

Thanks Guys,

Took Gary Jnr to Jessops, and he handled the D40, D80 and the G9. He has chosen the G9, and is very happy with his new toy. I'm chuffed too, as I now have a cool toy to play with after the weekend!!!

Gary!

Result then. The G9 is bloody great! :woot:
