Hi

I am thinking of getting a new or used Nikon D40 as my first DSLR.

I have heard that this is a good camera to start with, has anyone got any sample photos, mainly animals, as that is what I want to be photographing.

Thanks
Vicky :)

HI Vicky
Yesterday I took delivery of a REFURBISHED D40 form Cameraworld for £199 including an 18-55 lens. Absolutely mint condition and checked by nikon with a 6 months parts and labour guarantee. It is very compact and light - what I would call a ladies camera - but it has a lot of the functions my D300 would have. I would go for one of these. MERVYN:clap:;)

Hi,

The D40 is a good camera to start with, I have had mine for a year and have had great fun learning about photography with it. As always the best thing is to go and have a hold in Jessops or wherever to see if it feels right to you. I have a D40 but was intent on getting a Canon but when I had a play with one it just did not feel right.

The D40 does not have as many features/ gimmicks as others and also has the issue of needing lenses with a built in motor ( designated AF-S) and this does limit you on choices. However AF-S lenses will work with other Nikons with built in motors.

I have posted an image below that was taken last year as requested but all of the photo's in my gallery and flickr are from the D40.

The other issue to be aware of is that with 6mp if you are mainly looking to do wildlife you will get a certain amount of image quality loss if you try and crop too much - you will need to get at least the 70-300 AF-S VR or equivilent.

Hope this helps

Click the link below. All of these shots have been taken with a D40.

Most aren't with the kit lens though.

Oi, I ain't no lady, least I wasn't the last time I looked.

I've got one, love it, but that said will be more than ready to sell it off when I get around to getting a D80/90; Good beginners camera!

I recently worked with a tog at a wedding and he used one as a backup
he thought it was great
I just wish nikon has put a motor in the things?

I'm in agreement, but at the same time looking at my personal progression, even if a motor was in the body I'd still be looking forward to getting a new body at this time (for better ISO control/Performance, more controls on the camera body itself, built in CLS, the like)

In essence the reason that people are drawn to the D40 and will love it when they first get it (small size, light weight, easy to understand controls) will end up being the limitations and reasons why they want to upgrade

And heck at the prices they're going now they're a steal.

Awesome, thanks for the advice, I have just brought one off Ebay for £239 plus a 2GB card :D

Taken on the auto setting alone. :)

Indeed, I've got a D40 and it is a great little camera in it's own right. Enuff said. :)

The D40 is a great little camera. I bought one as my first DSLR and sold it when I upgraded and really regret doing so now! I will be buying another in the not too distant future as my walk around/holiday camera as it's so light and compact compared to my D300.
