Hello.
I'm interested in doing portraiture/fashion sort of photography in the studio, and I am after a flashgun.. just a cheapish one to sort of test the water and maybe progress with advanced ones as my skills improve.

I was wondering if any has any recomendations.
I haven't got much of a budget.. 60-80 pound.. as I am a student :P.

My camera is the Nikon d40 if this helps.
Thanks very much,
Ryan.

Hey mastertrinity.

Thanks for the reccomendation.
However, it is slightly out of my price range.. (I am like RESTRICTED to £80 max)
I was looking for something a little bit cheaper, or even going second hand.

Any other reccomendations?
Thanks,
Ryan :)

Theres a saying though
"Buy cheap Buy twice"
Look at what you are getting before jumping in...

I've got hold of a brand new SB400 from Comets for £49. Brand new. With warranty.
While it isn't the biggest flashiest (no pun intended) flash gun, it is making for a great beginner's flash (where the light head can be moved at an angle - head-on for normal flash shots or upwards to bounce the light around).
Might be worth checking out your nearest Comets for that one, but I'm wondering if it is a discontinued item?

Comet as in the big electrical store?

I went to two of my local ones today and both told me they do not sell them?

i saw comet selling off a couple

think it was run off stock so won't stock them again

i enjoyed my sb400 alot
good size and was perfect for my use, nothing fancy but direct and bounce light off ceiling etc.

Does the SB400 swivel? Only if you're interested in portraiture (and shooting in portrait as opposed to landscape) you may end up having to bounce of the walls rather than ceiling if you catch my drift.

good point it doesn't swivel (from what i remember)

for me the size was perfect and what would have made it better if it had a swivel mount
