Greetings people I’m new on this forum and also new to the SLR camera, and would like some advice on the Nikon "D40" 6.1m pixel digital SLR camera, and what I can achieve with it.

Thanks for your advice Gary much appreciated, didn’t want to buy the camera without some advice, not used this type of camera before always had the auto idiot free type before, had a play with Canon EOS 300 with 28-105mm.

I think the D40 is a great camera and coupled with a good lens would give the best camera a run for it's money IQ wise.

It's a good sturdy workhorse and a reliable entry level camera. Fairly light too.

Pretty much any DSLR camera will give great results in the right hands.

The D40 has the limitation of not being able to autofocus with older lenses (including all primes other than the new 50mm.) If that's not a problem for you then it's a fine camera. It will autofocus with all the newer AF-S lenses, which includes pretty much all the zooms being made now, and with all Sigma HSM lenses. I'm not sure of the lens designation for Tokina and Tamron lenses, but you should be able to find out quite easily.

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM is a great lens to pair with the D40/D60, as long as you know it won't work properly on the D700/D3/any Nikon film body.
