NIKON D4 announced

No. Maybe it's being counter productive now.

Yeah not quite that bad anyway, call about 3 times a week, generally to see if they have stock dates and am generally quite pleasant.

After this weekend its irrelevant as I dont have anything important to photograph for a bit.

Guess il just leave it in their incapable hands.

Must admit that I'm thinking of telling them to stick it and getting my cash back, I'm so peed off with jessops who have a corporate stance of lying to customers who bought early and actually supplying people who bought later but happened to have a business account. If I do stick with them on the D 4 purchase it will be the last thing I buy from them.. Their loss in the end as I have very little fx gear to go with the D4, so some other supplier will get the 10k for lenses and such.

Have to say I cannot understand your loyalty to Jessops. Grays "lost" my early order so I placed an order with Park Cameras (they are local to me) four weeks later, Robert's your mother's brother, I get a call to pick up my shiny new D4. Pre increase price too!

I guess its the pre-price increase and the free battery for pre-order. After this weekend im not fussed when it comes really as I dont have anything specific.

Still have not got mine from jessops. Pre ordered it at the end of Jan!

For those who have the D4 isit worth £4800 to be better then the D3S?

That's what I want to know. Or put another way is it better to get just a D4 or a used D3s and a D800 for much the same price?

Well I've now owned both and I genuinely believe that the D4 is better. I don't video. I am talking still shots.

Hi Kev

Glad to hear you have your d4.

Could you give us comparisons as to how or why its better.

As I dont have mine yet i am debating on whether to get another second had d3s

I'll try and do it when I get home from work. Bit too busy with work at the moment. I did consider cancelling my order and buying another D3s. I'm glad that I didn't.

Kev

its one hell of a camera still finding stuff that my D3 did not have. All i can say is wait it will be worth it.

I've just got home. I was going to write about how awesome it is. Then I found this:

awesome D4

and that really says what I think about it. I've only been out twice and once in the studio with it. Hopefully I will do a bit more this weekend. But if I were you, I would hang on to the order.

I got home from holiday and had a message from jessops saying my D4 was in, quick trip into hull on my way to Leeds and picked it up. As I was in a rush I asked if everything including the second battery was in the box to which the reply was yes. You guest it when I got home tonight opened the box and no second battery, will be onto them tomorrow to get the battery.
The xqd card and reader are there so am happy with that, as some have report not all D4 boxes contain them.
One thing that did ring true with and earlier post is a comment from the sales assistant about being surprised they could order the D4 as they are normally supplied by their "centres of excellence" stores only. This may be the reason some who ordered later but through bigger stores got their D4 earlier than those who ordered earlier through smaller stores.
Needles to say I'm now a happier chap, but like everyone else I have to wait for the battery to charge and it takes forever.

Pleased for you Gavin! It was me that commented on the stores. I'm still surpirsed that they actually took the order! It was a definite NO from the area manager, when I tried.
You are going to love the D4 mate.

Kev.

Well I had an update from Jessops saying I was no 1 on the web order list and mine should be next web order out. We shall wait and see, Seemingly Gav store ordered on 11th and mine was 10th.

Hopefully I will see one this week and even more hopefully it will come with the XQD pack.

Now trying to quickly sort an upgrade to my Mac OS as im just on Leopard and last week my dvd drive bust so I need an external sharpish to be able to upgrade OS to accept LR4.

Typically my big jobs are done now too but will be nice to learn and get to grips with it before something important.

Good luck Dan! I hope it turns up for you. It's worth the wait.

It's a very small step that's for sure and in retrospect I'd probably wait till after the gold rush when the price drops. Plus points are the focus speed with longer lenses in low light, dynamic range is slightly better and the new memory card is blisteringly quick

It depends if you have a D3s or are looking to upgrade. If you don't have a D3s, you will be more than happy if you buy one. Absolutely superb camera. I didn't think mine could ever be improved on.
If you have one and are considering upgrading, you have to decide what you want from it. There are something like 40 odd improvements on the D4. Some are so minor, you wouldn't even notice. Others are ergonomic and it 'feels' better. Then there are things like Kev has stated. Being able to focus with a long f4 lens with a 2 x converter fitted and focussing fast with it and getting a clean shot.
It aquires focus better in very low light. I personally think it is faster at focussing all of the time. More accurate too. But I was a couple of months without my D3s. So maybe I forgot how quick it was?
Obviously higher MP, so cropping is a bit better. The XQD card is stupidly fast. They should have put two in there.
For me, the upgrade didn't cost that much, so it was worth it.
Overall, it is a better camera. But only you can decide what you need from your camera.
If you can afford to buy it, need all of the benefits it offers and will get the use out of it. Then I would say go for it.
Don't get too obsessed with online reviews. It will confuse you. Think about what you need.

I kind of know what Im after and think its a great addition, at a huge cost for an amature (though I do paid work from time to time via studio).

My issue was that I primarily shoot fashion, but love shooting sports, wildlife and generally allsorts. I do the odd wedding and some boxing so low light is essential.

I currently have a D700, it doesnt so much hold me back as just generally be hit and miss in situations when its really being pushed. I love the 700 and hope to continue with it.

I dont so much need it, but I want it and will use its benefits. Should be a massive upgrade for me

I'm kind of in a similar boat here. In all honesty I don't really need a D4 but with not owning any Nikon gear at all (coming from Canon) maybe getting a D3s is a bit silly.

As I've stated earlier in this thread my two options are D4 or D800 and used D3s. The only real downsides to the D4 are that it's probably not great for travel photography due to it's size/weight and it's video by all accounts is pretty soft. Other than that it seems to do everything in one amazing package. The D800/D3s option gives backup but do I really need a D800 as backup? I could get a D4 and then a D700 or D7000 when I really do need a backup body.

But then on the other hand I already have a Canon XF100 pro video camera so I don't strictly need to have video on a DSLR it would just be handy when I don't want/need to take a camera a video camera with me.

Only you can decide of course, (well you can't but that's another matter :D ), but for me if the option is either a D4 or a D3S and a D800 the two-camera option has to be the choice.

(well you can't but that's another matter :D )
Tell me about it! lol :D I know what you are saying about the two camera setup but I am wondering if the D800 is really the ideal option here. I could wait and get a D600 or whatever will come next at a more affordable price than a D800. Is the D800 a good travel photography camera with it's massive file sizes = using memory cards very fast.

I dont understand what everyone is moaning at, Jessops is the best camera shop on this earth... or they will be when they deliver my D4 on Thursday :D

As always never that simple, now say that they did expect a shipment today but its not arriving. Boohoo.

Im going to be accepting and patient now.

You''ll appreciate it more when it does come. ;) :D It's a test to see if you are ready for such an amazing piece of kit. Be patient grasshopper....

Well its arrived but the wife cannot seem to find a free XQD/reader. Booo.

Never mind.

Long afternoon ahead.

It has a sticker on the box, telling you if it's in there. Sounds like you've struck unlucky.

Kev.

I was under the impression that all the ones with the free card and reader had already been delivered. Maybe some are still getting through.

Going to order xqd tonight.

The thing is absolutely sublime - love it already.

Big leap from the D700 for me.
