NIKON D4 announced

Tom, I presume that's directed at me since, as far as I'm aware, I'm the only person here to have owned up to receiving one.

There seem to be a few indignant comments (I do realise not all from you, Tom) concerning the fact that I have not posted any images from the D4 yet. If I could just lay the matter to rest, I am having a difficult time in my life at the moment with such issues as a sick relative that is requiring a lot of travel, time and thought at the moment. Whilst I would seriously love to be more engaged with TP and contribute more to this thread amongst others, I am juggling a lot of balls at the moment and any time I get with the camera is to make it earn some money. I could go into more detail but I trust nobody here would expect me to justify myself any more to complete strangers, frankly I resent posting even this but get the feeling the comments aren't going to stop unless I say something.

I hope that lays this matter to rest and no hard feelings, Tom.

Thanks.

Not need for explanations Keith. I hope your relative is on the mend.

Fatboy, thats not right, if you preordered you get the preorder price. It would only go down on a price change never up.

They honour the order price.

The D4 has gone up in price so how many of us who have ordered from jessops will have to pay the extra £500 for it now, has anyone paid in full for there pre order?

I paid for mine up front and at a discount too. Double win!! :D

Kev.

Not aimed at you Keith, I thought there were more than just you who had one.

It is only because I am eager to see 'real life' shooting as I feel these are better for our needs.

I understand Tom, thanks.

Mine was paid in full as well so I hope I will get it at that price

Well I have one as well. But my priority is to my clients....and I'm snowed at the moment. I doubt I'll have D4 images ready to post in a public area until Easter.

Honestly anything taken with it posted on here has so many variables associated with it that you can't really tell if noise is high iso, recovered underexposure or any other manner of things, let alone any impact downsizing and post-processing will introduce.

What I will say is that is feels great in the hand, AF is lighting fast in comparison to the D3/D3s/D3x, lock on subject is near instantaneous, there are lots of little tweaks which give improvement, and image quality and high-ISO are no worse than the stellar D3s and may well present more information and detail at high-iso even if the noise is the same. But I haven't printed any let alone really processed them since getting it on Thursday.

If you are undecided or need to see more images then your best bet is to hire one, try it out for yourself and then buy if you feel it warrants it. It'll be a worthwhile £90-100 on what is now a £5300 investment + anywhere in the region of £250-£600 to equip with more XQD/spare battery/battery cover etc... apparently hireacamera have at least one in.

It is a definite worthwhile upgrade on the D3, from the D3s I'd say at the moment - not - especially at the new launch price (and with XQD cards at a new launch/sole supplier premium). From a Dxxx or Dxxxx if you need one then it is a no brainer really.

LOL, well that must have taken longer to type that it would to export from LR, as for hiring a camera to see images from it YEH right I think not.....

Still don't think anyone here has one to be honest with you

I've had my email and text today from jessops, informing me that my order is still delayed. Not looking good for my April 3rd trip to France.

Kev.

Pro users are given priority

Only if the dealers can supply. I'm an NPS member and they still said that there would be a wait.
Nikon just don't seem to have enough for supply.

Kev.

Just hope this all get sorted out and Nikon please do the right thing.

I just spoke with the Nikon and they confirmed pre ordered customers would get the pre order price. Although I do not trust anything that Jessops staff say these days lol

Just got this from Nikon
Dear Anthony,

Thank you for your email.

I am very sorry to learn about your dissatisfaction with the recent pricing change.

Due to a local internal systems error, the incorrect RRPs on the D800, D800E and D4 products were communicated in the UK and Irish markets at the time of announcement. The correct RRPs for the products should have been D4: £5289.99, D800: £2,599.99 and D800E: £2,899.99. We would like to apologize sincerely for this unfortunate mistake, which has been corrected with immediate effect.

We know that there has been strong consumer interest in these products and a high level of pre-orders placed with retailers. I would like to confirm that Nikon will be honouring the original prices to retailers on all customer pre-orders placed before March 24th 2012.

Please do not hesitate to contact us again in case of any questions.

Kind regards,

Aleksander Nowak

Translation:-

Nikon have seen the Canon pricing and want to come in just under.....

My D4 seems to have developed its first fault! The 'Lock Mirror up for Cleaning' command is permanently greyed out and can't be selected (yes, the battery IS fully charged lol!). Just spent half an hour on the phone to NPS and they're all baffled, they've asked me to recalibrate the battery to see if that helps.

Let me just go check mine...

... No wait Jessops clowns are still clinging onto mine :bang:

I am so annoyed with this pricing issue it's not even funny. Been deliberating over getting a D4 for a while but wasn't in a position to do so until the last couple of weeks. Just been in Istanbul last week and decided to order one once I got back. So I am livid that the price has shot up in the 5 days I have been away. I can't justify that price hike especially when I have to get new lenses as well.

As a potential convert from Canon I have to say I am less than impressed with Nikon on this issue. :gag: I am now seriously thinking of just sticking with Canon which is annoying after selling off all my Canon gear for a move to Nikon. :suspect:

I'm sorry but I just don't believe this is an "internal systems error". It's not like Nikon UK won't have noticed the prices in shops and all the rumours in the previous few months that it would be slightly cheaper than the 1Dx. I feel we are being lied to and that's not how to run a company selling such top end equipment in my view. :(

Rant over....for now. :naughty:

If you're serious about the price hike being the thing putting you off the D4, a trip to Copenhagen may be in order.

Keith

You need to turn of the network connection in your settings and it should let you do what you want.

Why Copenhagen? I have a friend that lives very near there and I LOVE that city so a trip over there would be a definite possibility.

Does anyone know what the price is/was in the US for pre-orders and if that has changed.

I SUSPECT that pre-orders have been phenomenal - hence - they just discovered the error.

Leaves a bad taste in the mouth for people like Andy.

Well, been told today that it will be at least 9th April before Nikon release the D4's to Jessops.
Jessops still have the largest order with Nikon in the country and will get the first set of bodies after that date.

Kev.

Yep it sure does. I suspect they discovered the orders were so high they could jack up the price to match the 1Dx without losing many customers. Smacks of greed to me. For a massive company like Nikon it's can't just have been an error. :naughty:

I have just recently sold a 1Dmkiv to move to Nikon but with this issue and the fact that I'm unlikely to get hold of a D4/1Dx for months then I might well return to a 1Dmkiv and save me some cash. ;) I would go with a used D3s but I really need full HD video for my work.

I emailed the chairman of Nikon UK about the delay for the D4. I have just found this in my inbox:

Dear Kevin,

Thank you for your recent email to Michio Miwa regarding the pricing errors on the new D800/e & D4 cameras.

He has asked me to reply on his behalf.

I realise this is not what you questioned but just so that are aware,I can confirm that there was an internal error which caused the wrong pricing to be advertised for a period of time. As such, Nikon will honour pre-orders made through Nikon dealers before 24th March 2012. From that date onwards, orders will be subject to the correct pricing for those models.

In terms of supply, I am sure that you can appreciate Global demand for the D4, D800 and D800E has been very high. In fact it has exceeded current supply levels. We are aware that there are many consumers who are having to wait some time before they receive their orders. We apologise for the delay and are doing our best to ensure that products are distributed across the retail network as quickly and fairly as possible. Please liaise directly with Jessops to find out where you are on their waiting list.

On behalf of Nikon, I sincerely apologise for the confusion and inconvenience caused, and hope that you will see this for what it was, a genuine mistake.

If we can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us

Kind regards,

Ian McDermott

So how long was it before Nikon became aware of the internal error???????

This whole "internal error" rubbish smells like BS, there's no way such an obvious public thing stays unnoticed for more than a few hours.

Hell, there's no way the press release and announcement of 3 cameras would have distinctly wrong RRPs in them, especially when those RRPs are roughly what we'd expect to pay any way.

It's either gross incompetence or pure BS.

Not sure what I think about the price increase. I now know that the price I paid will be honoured.
I do appreciate the fact that someone even bothered to reply to my email. It would have been very easy to just ignore me.

Kev.

Kevin I got something along them lines as well maybe worded slight different but yes still got a reply from them.

There was some talk on the NikonRumours site of the Video tax being a possibility for this price increase

"The EU defines a video camera as one that will take video clips of 30 minutes or more. If such a camera is not manufactured in Europe (I doubt whether any still are) it is subject to a 12% import duty (and regular vat on top of that). To avoid this tax manufacturers built in a limit of 29 minutes and 59 seconds. "

As the D4 and the D800 have the clean HDMI out which can be connected to an Atomos Ninja or similar, this means that extended periods of video can be recorded far in excess of 30 minutes.

It seems a little bit of a coincidence that the price rise for the D4 and the D800 is almost bang on 12%

This seems a plausible theory for the price rises and so called 'internal errors' to me...... ??
