NIKON D4 announced

I'm going to France on 3rd April for 10 days. What's the betting it arrives whilst I'm there.
Anybody want to look after it for me until I get back. :D

Kev.

yes please our back door swings open could i please have it as a door stop lol :p

Three days with the D4 now and I'm loving it! I'm still discovering more incremental improvements that make it a joy to use and a seriously useful work tool. From the display to the AF system to the ergonomics to the menu's, there feels like so much attention to detail... heck, even the shutter sounds sharper and more satisfying! I really think Nikon have got it right by going for evolution rather than revolution here, to take a great camera like the D3S and improve on nearly every aspect rather than completely reinvent it looks like a very canny approach and, to my mind, they have done a superb job.

Now be honest do you really have a D4? cos with out seeing an image or two I just don't believe you!

Wilky

Jessops staff are a bunch of cowboys. They all state different things. Not one person there knows what they are talking about.

I popped into a jessops on New Oxford St last night and even they did not have clue. All they kept saying was that the Nikon D800 is out tomorrow (today) why dont you pop and see that? lol

I will wait for my d4 to arrive, im no worse off, I dont actually need the camera anyway, will be seriously punching above my weight.

Todays update, theres a firmware issue and they have no idea when they are supposed to be arriving. :D I said that was mid february and it delayed the initial release. They just said they had no idea

Danny I have just spoken with Nikon UK and they tell me they have no firmware issues and the D4 was released to retailers on 15th March.

I was told there were manufacturing issues due to staff shortage but that was it.

Im just going to go on holiday as if it isnt coming. Its doing my head in.

Then let the courier deliver it when I go, attempt to redeliver and send back to Jessops by the time I return for it then to be out of stock. Ever the optimist!

Jessops told me as well about firmware issue :cuckoo: and I ask for the real reason why, as Nikon Know of no firmware issues:naughty:, they could not answer me........:bang::bang::bang:

What I do not understand is why they lie? If they were to just be honest we would all know where we stand.

Fatboyjarv what did they actually say when you told then nikon are not aware of any firmware issues?

K4mmd they said this is what they have been told to tell all customers that call in about the D4, I had the guy from Nikon on loud speaker and he could hear the girl from jessops and what she was saying.... to which he said this is not true and its not right that they bad mouthing the product which dose not have any firmware issus...

I think this is why Nikon are taking greater control of who can supply and service their professional products.

I've not read the whole thread, but are you committed to buy from Jessops? Would it be worth trying a Nikon Pro dealer?

Treeman I would go too there very back of the list and have to wait a whole lot longer..

I can wait, more so because I get an additional battery.

I would rather they just said, we have 3 units, youre not getting one, next lot will be 15/4.

Job done.

More annoying really than anything else.

I know Grays only received 8 bodies in the initial release on the 15th all for named photographers so I can't believe that jessops received that many, if any

Forget it chaps. Dont think we will be getting the D4 anytime soon.

I have spoken to Calument, Fixation and Jacobs. All were really professional and honest stating they had stock 2-3 bodies on the 15th for NPS users and dont really know when they will be getting stock. (I should have ordered from one of them)

Jessops on the other hand want to lie again. They just called me to tell me nikon are now saying "there is not problem with the firmware they are just carrying out more tests on the firmware"

Roll on April!

I've read a couple of articles this week that suggest the D4 is not much (if any) of an improvement over the D3s in terms of noise and image quality.

It appears that video is where the biggest improvements have been made.

So I'm interested as to why folks are changing to the D4? Is it for video, is it for high iso, what?

ETA - I would like to point out that I am still very keen to shoot a D4 myself and if the stories are untrue and the D4 is a much better stills camera then I will no doubt upgrade at some point in future. I'm just wondering what is motivating people NOW (especially with these stories circulating about the D3s vs D4)

Jessops have something like 90 bodies ordered with Nikon. They have about 49 of those ordered by customers.
That was fact when I ordered mine. I saw it on the screen. They have the largest order in the country for the D4.
I can't see us having to wait much longer. I was told end March/early April. Only time will tell.

Kev.

I had confirmation a couple of weeks ago from NPS in the Middle East (their offices are next door to me, in Dubai) that is was delayed due to firmware.

It's not available here for at least another 4 weeks whilst they fulfil US and European orders.

Hi Ryan,
I remember when the D3s came out. Lots of people saying it wasn't much of an upgrade from the D3.
We soon found out that is was.
Like most things in life, everyones an expert. Some even without touching the product that they claim to be an expert in.
It hasn't cost me a huge amount to upgrade. My attitude is that after listening to the talks by Nikon at Focus and believing that Nikon aren't likely to take a step backwards when producing their top model dslr, it wasn't much of a brainer for me to change.
I like the improvements with the focussing system. To be able to bolt a 2 x converter on my 300mm or 200-400mm and have auto focus swung it for me.
have a look at this review by Richard Peters:

Kev.

That's the kind of answer I was looking for. Cheers mate.

So for Kev it's the F8 auto focus. What about the rest of you.....?

Just one of the things that helped me (and might help you Ryan):

Nikon has improved the autofocus system drastically. Yes they have kept a 51-point autofocus, however it can operate in much lower light. Rated at -2EV, it can handle an f/8 lens. This allows you to finally use that 2.0x tele-converter on that crappy lens of yours. Listen if you buy a D4, you need to upgrade your lenses too.

The bottom line is that this is a huge advantage, especially for sports and weddings, etc. When you’re depending on your autofocus system in low-light situations, the D4’s autofocus will assure greater and faster accuracy over the D3s.

It will focus fast in equivelent to 'moonlight'. By D3s was good at low iso, but sometimes missed the focus point in low light.

That's really interesting Kev. I must admit hitting focus in mega low light is a big draw!

Another for you to think about Ryan..

The metering worked great on the D3S and D3. So why did Nikon upgrade the metering? Because of improved flash exposure performance with i-TTL-BL and i-TTL (aka through the lens metering). The D4 is the first Nikon DSLR to independently control flash exposure compensation and camera exposure compensation. On previous cameras, increasing camera exposure would also increase the flash exposure, when shooting in a non manual mode. Now, the extra step of compensating for both is removed with the D4's uncoupled flash exposure compensation. Finally! Read more at Nikon's website.

That's good and the first time I'd heard about that ( why do they hide these little nuggets? ).

I remember Joe McNally saying the skin tones were improved but I've not heard a single thing about it since. It's almost as if no-one wanted to admit they could be improved. But I think that's another thing you need to see for yourself. Working on my own Raw files is the only way I think I could be sure the we're different - certainly looking at Internet samples won't help.

Just A quick update Nikon have only let out a few cameras so far and by what I got from them today is mid April ish for the D4, so its not jessops issue but a Nikon one

Super....:bang:

Spoke to them today, the guy I spoke to said Jessops were having a meeting with Nikon and he had just come from Head Office while it was going on.

He said basically they haven't got what they asked for and need and Nikon are holding back, said were looking at end of next week and worst case a week this coming monday.

Whatever-Trevor.

The D4 has gone up in price so how many of us who have ordered from jessops will have to pay the extra £500 for it now, has anyone paid in full for there pre order?

How come there are still no photos from this camera if some of you claim to have one?

I find that very strange on a photo forum!

I'm not sure I do. Whilst you can't legislate for people having an ego-***** by pretending I'd suggest that most of the people who actually have a D4 in their possession (and there are probably only 200-300 in the UK at the moment, and a small percentage of those are on here) are not necessarily the kind of people who's first thought when receiving one is to post an image on a forum taken with one to prove it.

Tom, I presume that's directed at me since, as far as I'm aware, I'm the only person here to have owned up to receiving one.

There seem to be a few indignant comments (I do realise not all from you, Tom) concerning the fact that I have not posted any images from the D4 yet. If I could just lay the matter to rest, I am having a difficult time in my life at the moment with such issues as a sick relative that is requiring a lot of travel, time and thought at the moment. Whilst I would seriously love to be more engaged with TP and contribute more to this thread amongst others, I am juggling a lot of balls at the moment and any time I get with the camera is to make it earn some money. I could go into more detail but I trust nobody here would expect me to justify myself any more to complete strangers, frankly I resent posting even this but get the feeling the comments aren't going to stop unless I say something.

I hope that lays this matter to rest and no hard feelings, Tom.

Thanks.

Not aimed at you Keith, I thought there were more than just you who had one.

It is only because I am eager to see 'real life' shooting as I feel these are better for our needs.
